Ok.. i know this has been covered probly before.. but why are manufacturers building all V6's??? where did all the straight 6's go??? lexus used to have a bunch, but pretty much are discontinued..

arent straight 6's cheaper to manufacture, easier to maintain, easier for upgrading, and stronger in the bottom end???? arent they easier to work on???

can someone please explain to me why this is happening??? i love the straight 6 and ill never own anything aside it.. its easy to work on, easy to build.. only one head... etc etc...

discuss!

Inline's require longer engine compartments if mounted traditionally. V6's are easier to fit in a RWD/AWD setup. Many manufacturer's switched to the FWD setup in the 90's and you try fitting an I6 sideways in any car with a transmission next to it lol.

Volvo still uses inline motors (for 4, 5, and 6 cylinder vehicles).

They are front-drive or AWD and actually transversely mount the inline motors in order to fit modern cab-forward designs (also for safety).

The motors are known for being quite reliable. They also have many turbocharged motors (single and sequential setups).

Check out GM's lineup - 4.2L 6 cylinder is a Straight 6.

I've got an I5 in my Colorado (thinking of swapping it out for a 5.3L Vortec tho)

BMW uses quite a bit of I6's.

Most of the time most consumers wouldnt even be able to tell the difference even if you told them. All that they would remember is 6 and would go home and say it has a v6.lmao

Lol.... 25% of supras i see on craigslist and ebay say V6... i just laugh.

Is it cheaper for manufacturers to construct FWD vehicles? why are they building so many vehicles with front wheel drive??? even some "suvs" are front wheel drive... i just think thats pathetic.

I just think I6 is the most ideal choice... ive grown onto supras so much i dont even THINK of owning any other car.. just spending 50,000$ to make my supra godly. lol.i just see so much potential in it..

Wouldn't one of the reasons be a shorter head that would be less prone to warping as well? I think V6's have a lower center of gravity to em too, less hieght.

Bob Lutz on the was 'supposed-to-be' RWD NG Impala:

"My personal preference is large, rear-wheel-drive cars," says Lutz. "My business preference is doing what is right for the shareholder and the public, in light of upcoming regulation on fuel economy. If there's a mile or two difference in fuel economy, you go for the one with the better economy. That's where the internal debate [on the Impala]is now--no firm decision at this point, but my guess is that we will come down on the side of the front-drive car."

lower gravity and less height are good points.. but i still dont see why people are eliminating it. do they see it only as a perfomance car engine??

i just see the V6 as so cluttery and soo much unnecessary crap...
maybe im becoming so opinionated that i just hate v6's lol... which i do..im like pffffft i have a straight 6 turbo.... ahh we need more supras and skylines.

Cummins are one of the only company I can think of still producing I6's....maybe jeep?

There are quite a few others, some of them already mentioned in this thread.
