Has anybody thought of eliminating the gas pedal and route the throttle cable to the center console connected to a lever which could be controlled with your hands?

I did something similar once, the throttle cable broke on a VW Karman Ghia I had so I fished it out through the truck, wrapped it in a rag and drove home with it in my left hand controlling the gas.... talk about hand eye coordination, time the shift for traffic, let up on throttle with left hand, let go of wheel, shift, repeat
