I just noticed my main caps are scratched up.. Either they were like that when my engine was running or the machine shop did something weird but here they are. Finger nail catches so I figured it had to be an issue.

Looks like handling marks from less than perfect handling at the machine shop.
You want to take off any high points, or they will put pressure on the bearing inserts, and caus problems.
You do not want to take off anything but the high spots.
I would talk to the shop who did it.
I would use a fine Indian hand stone to take them off, but that is not something most people have in their tool boxes.

ya. 800 grit is coarse. something more of the line as 3000 would be more of a question but the main caps are more of a finish of a mhg.

Machine shop said it's normal and it isn't very significant because it's the back of where the bearing seats. he said that's where the dowel goes through for some sort of procedure and that I can hit it with some scotch brite if i feel necessary.

Works for me!
