i havent tried many others... but i thinks its pretty easy if you understand what your adjusting. and it probably the most powerful unless you go standalone, which IMO are difficult to set up and use.

The HKS VPC is by far the easiest.
Plug in a GCC, and tune it from the dash.
Wire in an Apex S-AFC (Apex has this info on their site),
and have even more tuning capability.

No Lap-top needed.
The VPC ROM has all the base 7M info in it.
ROMs available for stock, or 550cc injectors.
I have seen other custom ROMs.

Even if you can't find the correct harness,
several people do up direct wire harnesses
(a whole whopping 5 wires).

Proven track record (they have been around since the late '90s).

And for a really nice one, expect to pay about $500-600.
There are several up on eBay right now.
And the people selling them, usually have the different ROMS.

I was going the MAFT-PRO route until I started reading through the dozens of threads on SM and SF. By the time I was done I was half cross-eyed, a little confused, and totally intimdated. I went VPC w/ SAFC and never looked back.

Good luck finding a functional VPC with correct ROM, temp and MAP Sensors, with both Main and accessory harnesses. Harnesses are least important since a direct hardwire can be done.

just wiring in an SAFC was shitty...

I dont like anything apexi makes, the VPC and GCC arent that great... theres no "refinement" there... the maft pro has WAY more options that you'll probably never even need. If you dont want standalone, maft pro is the best IMO.

I love my MAFT Pro. The constant improvement and additions to the functionality and software are uncommon in most piggybacks. I do not however consider it an easy to use system.

I don't recommend it, but to get the car up and running you can also try to find someone running a similar setup, get a copy of their bin and just upload that to your MAFT Pro.

But yeah, if you want the easiest to use... keep looking.

Having tuned just about everything out for the mk3, I must say the MAFTPRO is the most archane and tedious thing there is to tune.

So what would you suggest to a first timer

maftpro is not tedious to tune. you just have to understand what each setting adjusts and how to adjust it. you can tune fuel at different load points at different rpms... that in my opinion makes it much more capable than just about everything below a standalone. using a laptop with tunerpro makes it a lot easier too.
all the trouble you see here on the forums is mostly about bad wiring, troubles connecting to laptops, and bad base settings. these problems can easily be avoided by following advice of knowledgeable people here on the forums.
good luck choosing
