Machinist installed cam guide hold downs wrong.....am I SOL

He put them in all weird, backwards and right ways and.....like ARROWS aren't universal enough.
Sadly i didnt see them when I left because the valve covers were on as well...

I will never go back there....


Anyways, i havnt really driven it much at all, maybe 25 miles ishh perhaps not even
should I be fine to turn everything the way it should be or am I screwed?

Personally, I'd pull the caps, clean them, and plastigauge the setup as it is now. If something is way out, I'd likely try to get it closer by swapping caps.

But GV is right, 25 miles is a LONG time to run with something messed up like that, and if it was going to cause damage, it's already done.

You can should leave it because if it weared, it will wear itself in by now. Don't touch it, leave it alone if it is not causing a problem.

I guess that I should also point out that, were I actually in the same situation, I'd pull the head and get a real machine shop to fix it. Hell, if it turned out to be unrepairable, I'd buy a new one. There's no way I'd leave that on the engine unless I fully planned to junk the engine in the short term.

Replacing the cams and caps with ones in better condition can work but you will need to check clearances. Every engine wears differently. It might not even be required to change any shims but I would take the time to do it since I will have everything apart.

Worst case scenario, it's caused damage to the cam saddles on the head itself that's beyond what can be repaired... worse than that, I don't know if really loose clearances there could cause enough of a drop in oil pressure to roast a bearing, but I'd be worried and bugging someone knowledgeable at a machine shop about it. Furthermore, I'd be pulling off my oil filter and cutting it open to look for metal in the oil. If enough shaved aluminum peeled off the head to plug the oil filter, it would pop open the bypass, and start dumping that junk everywhere.

Considering the amount of damage that may have been caused coupled with how stupid of a mistake this is (they are clearly labeled), I would be taking this guy to small claims. Get plenty of photos to document this in case your engine tanks.

you could initiate....

And if it were me id do what grim jack said and go back and show them the fuck up
they did, if you do this you might actually get them to fix it for free and then also get that
machinest fired or punished. If that guy cant read freakin arrows, how is he reading measurments
and angles? Not to mention you might be saving other innocent people hardaches as well.

well, how would he fix it? hopefully the damage is not severe if there is any at all.....I can pray!!
How many miles would you expect there to be no damage, like 5 miles? because I may have exaggerated a little bit on that 25 mile value, considering the car is not only illegal and unregistered, but also half the body parts are off so I've only really driven it in, out, down the street and back, thats about it..

And if I don't have the receipt, cant he just be like, oh I dont know you....

That includes only driving the car short distances too. I would not trust that to last for long distances. Maybe just a go around town car maybe?

Damage will be done after running for a minute or two....:nono:

The head has the caps bolted down then line bored and honed so each cap tunnel is perfectly round and in line as they're doweled in place, swap them around out of order/position and if there's any variation in the dowel holes the cam will deform the hole to suit.

They would have to machine some off the base of the Caps and then line bore/hone them, head needs to come off to do it.
