Im thinkin aboot putting some new bearings and maybe rings into the gte long block that recently recieved.. The motor is said to be low mileage and appears inside as if this is true, however i would like to put new rod and main bearings in, possibly adding new rings as well.. Would I HAVE to have machine work done other than a cylinder hone, assuming there are no spun bearings or gouged cylinders? I'd rather be safe than sorry but I cant really afford the machine work at this time.. Any advice/info is appreciated....
thanks
chris

A hone of the cylinders yes, the bearing journals probably not, but you never know for sure til you see them. If you use toyota rings and still have cross hatch in cyl walls, dont even hone it! The other things to consider is deck the block and resurface the head, install MHG while your apart, #1 most important mod if you plan on modifying. If your just driving stock, retorque head bolts and drop her in, you never know what can of worms your opening when you start tearing into these babies.

:umno:

If you pull the pistons you should get new rings. New rings will not seat if you don't hone the cyls. With new bearings you want to get the rods resized. The rods need to be resized to match up with your crank journal diameters and bearing thickness. Machine work is pretty damn cheap, especially if you are just getting a rehone and resizing the rods.

::fundy:: They WILL seat if they are Toyota rings, notice i just said Toyota rings! They are softer and we have better luck not honing when using them. If you use the correct Mark toyota rod bearings, rods don't need resizing, but I agree with what youre saying if you use Performance parts, then I would get the rods resized and shot peened as well.....I did!

My understanding of ring seating is that the bore needs to 'adjust' to the rings more than the rings 'adjust' to the bore. I could be wrong though.
