ma70 is the chassis code. ma71 is turbo. all mk3 are a70 chassis. m for m series engine. jza70 is jz engine in a70 chassis. mk4 are jza80. a80 is the chassis and jz is the engine.

^ read the article. i understand the difference..but i guess i failed to specify my question. i got the car about 10 years ago..i know nothing really on the history of it besides my uncle and dad did a swap of another 7MGTE into it. it has all stock turbo badging...but my question is why does my engine bay say MA70 and my door panel vin say MA71? its not a Half turbo car. its a turbo car. so why have both types?

The chassis is universal, when they role off the line toyota has no idea which will be turbo or not, It is a MA70 chassis. Once assembled they put the door tag on

all mk3's say ma70 on the firewall. mar71 is in the vin. if you look on the door jam sticker and it says r154 it is a turbo as only turbos had r154's except they came in autos also. you can even take the vin to toyota and they can look up weather or not the chassis is a a turbo or not.

edit: what are you concerned about? if your dad owned it he should be able to tell you if it was a orig turbo car.

eh dad didnt buy it original. one of my uncles owns a toyota/lexus shop and he came across the supra...swapped the engine in and was gonna resell it and my dad decided to buy it..he was away on business alot so the car would sit there for months at a time...in 10 years he probably put less than 10k on it.. honeslty he didnt take care of the car for shit. im 19 so i was pretty young when he got it..he pretty much treated it like a civic cheaped out on shit..autozone quality parts..i had my eye on it ever since i turned 15. as soon as i got the car a couple years ago i put about 2500 into it purely mainteance with driftmotion and got it running perfectly. now im just gettinr eady to do the exhaust and from there ill do interior then exterior.

So your uncle who did the swap would know if he swapped a blown gte or ge for a good running gte. What exactly do you want to know? Take your vin to toyoto and you can get all the specs for YOUR car. Even if it was a ge before and it was swapped in with the matching year harness and car you are fine and have nothing to worry about.

All MKIII's are A70's. MA70 is a 7M, JZA70 is 1JZ, GA70 is 1G. Those are chassis codes.

The MA70 or MA71 is on the VIN number to differentiate GE and GTE.

Not entirely true poodles. I have had both an NA and a Turbo. Both were MA70.

its not turbo or non turbo. The link I posted shows it clearly what the difference is. Not trying to sound rude and all but the proof is on that webpage.

"The next major change was 1986.5 when the 3rd generation Supra (MA70) was finally given its own identity. No longer part of the Celica line, the 1986.5 Supra was equipped with a 3.0 liter DOHC engine and retained the four-wheel disc brakes and all-independent suspension of its predecessors. In 1987, Supra (MA71) received a turbocharged engine producing 230 horsepower and 245 lb/ft of torque."

From that link.

lol! well i think we already figured out why theres both MA70 and MA71. my car was stock turbo according to my uncle. has all turbo badging and what not my chassis still has code MA70 and door panel says MA71 so like one of the previous posters say ALL chassis are MA70 off the line and whichever ones are decided to be made turbo gets the MA71 door panel vin. ~!
