LSD problem?

Yesterday, I was heading up my friends driveway and ended up having the rear drivers tire on the gravel, and the passenger tire on the snow/ice. The tire on the gravel didn't spin, but the other one did, preventing me from going forward. Can someone explain this to me? I thought the power was supposed to go to the tire that had the best traction.

Thanks,
Dunckel

EDIT: I have never had this problem before. Usually, when one is slipping, they are both slipping.

It may seem silly to ask, and I know it says LSD in the title, but are you sure it is an LSD? Or did you just assume that you had one?

Well, then it sounds like your LSD has packed it in...Providing you have a clutch-type diff and not one of those spendy Torsen/helical diffs...or even a LSD at all.

I am actually having the same problem, I'm not entirly sure I have an LSD however. The reason I think I might is that there is something on my diff that says something along the lines of "LSD oil only" or something like that. Also how can you tell if you have a clutch type or the other type if there even is a way without getting into it.

Sorry maybe a thread hi-jack there...

If it has the sticker, it is a LSD...unless someone has swapped in an open differential into the pumpkin.

I've only seen incorrect fluid lock the differential...although too much additive may cause excessive slipping...

It is dead. The Factory LSD only last like 60K miles with normal driving. Under hard conditions they got out quick.

I've seen them last waaaaaaaaaaay longer than that. Like 200K mi.

60K is like nothing w/ proper maintenence, unless you're drifting the thing all the time or practicing burnouts everyday.

I mean properly. It works well for longer. But not as it should. I can still do standing burnouts like nothing.. but once the you shift the car to one side the power slips to one side. and those numbers for the miles i got from researching around and from JawsGear which is a shop that rebuilds diffs. and yes i have a LSD 100% sure.

For those that asked if I had an LSD, yes I do. The fluid is fine and isn't leaking. I am thinking the clutch packs are worn. Funny thing is, it worked fine today on the same driveway.

I'd love to buy one of those, my LSD is gone, it slips like mad at 205K. Need to start saving.
