steve, that's what I think, that why I'm not convinced it has a bhg, I've looked around here (alberta, canada) for the test strips to test the coolant for oil but haven't been able to find any in this city.

jdub, can you explain what you mean by "cams pointing at the top index" I get the rest but I'm not sure what that means.

Thanks for the replies guys.

There is an index mark on each cam gear...there is a corresponding "V" shaped mark on the metal plate behind the cam gears. The mark on both cam gears should line up with the "V" when the crank is turned to put the timing mark on the zero index. With everything lined up, the CPS should look like this:

Doh! Sorry about that, forgot we were dealing with a NA here. The cam gear markings are the same.

It's even easier...the distribututor rotor needs to point at the #1 plug wire.

I second that. You do need to check cam/valve timing per my previous posts, but you also need to make damn sure it's not any of the belt driven accessories on the front of the motor. Just drop a belt one at a time and run...no noise, you found it ;)

yeah i will check all the belts tommorow. I did start the engine for a moment today and removed the oil cap and could hear ticking coming from inside.

I put the engine at TDC and the rotor is lined up 1 tick clockwise of the number 1 wire.

also drained the oil and checked the filter for metal shavings. didn't find any, did notice however that it looked pretty low on oil, which is weird cause I changed the oil less than 1500km ago and I havent noticed any oil leaks.

The crank was pointing at zero and the cam gears lined up on the back cover index?

You need to check the oil weekly ;)
How low was it?

Hey, I know it's been a while, but I was out of town for work for 2 weeks. anyways I took a video to better show you guys what's going on.

Since my last post I have reset the timing. I think the belt did in fact jump a gear, so I pulled the belt off and lined the cam gear`s and the distributor notches. then set the timing to 10 btdc. I still haven`t taken the crankshaft pulley off..I need a puller and I`m not sure which type to buy.

but anyways here`s the video with the timing fixed.
