Loud Noise coming from engine

Little man with a BFH was about to come out of the block in the video.

Just got an earful from my uncle...

It sounds really bad because It still has no oil... I started it to show the noise to this forum without thinking, and that was the motor running with no oil.

The oil was dripping from the pan after I ran something over. I have to fix that, fill it with oil, and then see what it sounds like.

Let me save you some time.

It's going to sound about the same...and by running it (given it's current condition), you will be diminishing any chance (slim/none) of rebuilding it.

I wouldn't waste the oil on it.

Once you've got 7M rod knock, even if it was "just" low, no amount of oil being added will ever make it go away... It'll only get worse the more you screw with trying to run it.
If it still idled basically normal/smooth but was noisy that's a glimmer of light at least because it means you didn't throw a rod, BUT if it was shaking or rocking in a pattern there's a good chance your bottom end is a fancy boat anchor...
If you threw a rod you'd lose a lot of oil very quickly.
A JDM 7M was under a grand last time I bought one, although I hear they're getting harder to find, and they usually last 6 months to a year on the original head gasket if you don't replace it before you drop the motor in and you also go fairly easy on it and don't run the a/c.
I've seen just leaking valve cover gaskets cause a 7M that usually went through about a quart every 3k miles lose over a quart in just 1k miles!
If you drive a lot you should check your oil in a 7M at least once a week.

If you don't know and don't want to learn how to do it yourself and/or you can't find any Supra guys near enough that are willing to help, i'm afraid you're in for a really major repair bill and any shop that quotes you a really cheap price, especially if they just want to slap a new set of bearings in it, would make me very suspicious of their work.

Sorry to hear of your misfortune.
Good Luck dude!

Alright... after some thinking, (and driving around in a minivan) I miss my supra and have decided I have 2 options.

(PREFERRED) Engine Swap, I can purchase a completely rebuilt 7mge with mhg and arp bolts and put it in.

Or I can buy another car...

If I do an engine swap I would like to have someone do it who has a clue about supras and would prefer having a member here do it who has done it before. Anyone up for it... list some prices. There will probably be other problems and I would like those fixed as well, but if the engine is out, they can't be that difficult... right :) ?

Dead serious about this... Please post here or PM me

tom..after reading alot of your posts and replies I recomend you buy another car...and not another supra! With all do respect I say this " you do not have near enough mechanical knowledge and knowhow to keep these old cars going...it will only be a serious money pit for you and probably get you in trouble with the law "speeding" when you just learned how to friggin drive! You already had it to 120mph and last month you asked how to do a burn out....you are going to kill yourself or worse someone else....

I have never asked to do a burn out... nor would I attempt to do one with this car. (it's N/A and I wanted it to last, going 120 was stupid but my friend was being an idiot, and I had no idea how to get home from where I was so I had to follow him)

I have done burnouts in more powerful, newer, and more reliable cars that the owner knew nothing would go wrong.

I get what you are saying though... That is kinda why I want someone with knowledge to put an engine in that I won't have to worry about leaking oil. and things like this.

If it's just the bottom end... I just put in new rod bearings, mains, seals and gaskets and it cost me $222 from the dealer (I know the guy there so I don't know how much difference that made). I didn't replace the oil pump however, that may be something that you need to do. Also, the journels on my crank were on the tight side of the tolerance... with rod knock that bad you may need a new crank to go along with everything else.

I hope to swap the engine, then learn a few things as I dissect this one and find out how bad it is. I would rather have an engine that has never sounded like the one in my car does.

Thanks for the recommendations though.

Accept responsibility for your actions.....

It wasn't your friends fault

You could always have stopped and asked directions.

very true... It was also partly my pride in the car that I said wasn't a slow shitbox, but it all comes down to me being a dumbass.

I don't think the car would have had an issue, but the oil was leaking badly. I had checked the car 2 days ago and it was fine. I'm going hunting for the leak when I get to use a lift saturday.

So I have two options...

get a 7mge that has been rebuilt well, with mhg machined block/head and arp bolts torqued correctly

or a 7mgte from http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Part...QadiZ2865QQcmdZViewItem?hash=item170243081719 that I have no idea about.

I am kind of leaning towards the 7mge as I don't need speed that much, and already go a little fast. Also It's nice knowing it is reliable.

Thoughts? I think I know the answer

How old are you?

My sugestion is to sell the car and get a different car. I would sell you my supra but its turbo and obiously you dont need more speed. But to do a rebuild you need to know these cars pretty well. Or have someone do it for you or help you.

I don't have enough knowledge to do a rebuild... at this point I just want to swap a 7mge into it that has been rebuilt well and maintain it.
