Lost My Supra Key...No SPARE!

Hey guys, I currently have three Supras, an 87, 89 and 91. I am building the 89 and I bought the 91 since the guy took apart the engine and forgot how to put it back together. I went inside it the other day and I believe I dropped the key inside or left it by the strut tower under the hood. All the doors and hatch are locked and I have no spare key.

I do have all the paperwork to show that this is not a stolen car and I have a bill of sale that was notarized at the time the sale was made with the pervious owner.

I know BMW can make keys for you with your proof of ownership. Can Toyota do the same if I provide ownership? I have the car at my Dad's shop and I really don't want to call a locksmith and have them charge a arm and a leg or rig up the door. That would be my last resort, call a locksmith, if I can't find the key. I looked all over the place and can't find it.

Nope, the VIN won't get you anywhere with Toyota any more as their database doesn't extend to our model year cars any more. The only way they can cut a new key for you is if you provide the key code off the lock cylinder inside the passenger door.

Really? I called the Toyota dealership the other day and the guy was able to look up a few parts after I gave him the VIN of my 89 Supra since it was a mix year for certain things. Anyone else have any ideas?

They can look up parts, certainly. But the records which tie a specific VIN to a specific key-cut aren't available anymore.

Other than calling AAA or another lock-smith service your next bet would be to break-in yourself. I can PM you some methods if you like but I'm not comfortable posting them.

when did toyota change that? Because I went THIS YEAR and had a key made at toyota for my 1991. all I needed was information (VIN) and proof of ownership and they guy went back looked up the info for the key and cut it for me. Took me a total of ten mins. Agian that was this year so did they change that since that happened? That was like back in Jan. I believe.

Couldn't give you a date or even a month though it's been reported through a good number of members in various locations that they weren't able to get a key made with the VIN anymore. Tried it myself, no luck. I suppose it's possible that some dealerships still have the database for keysets, but I personally think that's going to be the exception rather than a rule.

Glad to hear it's still available as an option for some members.

Call the dealer. Worst that will happen is they say no.

It is very possible that you still can. I know that GM will go back to 90 with key codes. Any older and you're out of luck.

mirage83: Thank you for your discretion.

I know, I am going to try my 89 key on the 91. I only tried the 87's keys on the 91. I am going to call the dealership tomorrow and see if they can still make it. I am going to call a few dealers too and see what they say.

Have them put the key code on your invoice if and when you get it. Keep it in your file in case this ever happens again. That's what I do, anyway.

Back in October, I went to a dealership here in DFW and they cut a new key for my 92. All I took was an insurance card with the VIN and my drivers license.
