Yep, I in the market for a radar detector, Looking for people that have personal experience would be cool. A little brief summary of "Pro's and con" would good as well.

Been beaten to death.

Eveybody seems to like the Valentine One and the Escort Passport 8500.

Valentine gives you the direction of the alert.

Escort has a new version of theirs which uses GPS to track frequent "false alerts" and silences those areas.

Bell has a good one too.

Dont waste your money on a cheap one. Plan on spending 300-450 dollars.

I had a 8500, it was great. Sold it one day to a local guy and he said it's still as good as it was, so i assume no one has quite figured out how to make radar undetectable to that unit.

I ran both the v1 and the 8500 x-50, currently i have a x50 in my supra and my dad runs the v1 in his car. They both offer similar performance and ill give the slight edge to the v1 for the stronger rear radar and the convenience of arrows. With that said imo the difference in price with similar performance and the addition of directional arrows isnt worth the significant increase in price.

These threads come up quite often from now on ill just repost this post

I've had my x50 for a long time also.

IMO, the V1 and x50 are almost identical in performance, minus the arrows.

V1's do cost more. But my main turn off is that they are so damn unsightly. Ugliest design for a detector i have ever seen.

Cant really go wrong with either one though.

Why would you buy anything other than a V1?

When new technology comes out, you send the V1 back to Valentine and they upgrade the guts to the newest stuff. All V1s are fully upgradable.

What do you do when Bell comes out with the 9500 and your $400 8500 model is obsolete? You throw it out and buy the 9500 for another $400! WooHoo!

Just get a V1 and say no to being a sucker.

And for some counterpoint... I stopped using a radar detector years ago. I haven't stopped driving fast. I don't get speeding tickets anymore. I just speed smarter than I used to, I guess.

I still have one in the car... it's been in the glove box for the last decade.

If you *do* use one, make sure you remove it and it's little suction cup circles on the windshield when you get pulled over. Leaving it there is a sure fire way to make sure you never get warnings instead of tickets.

As a side note, Make sure you mount it properly.

Pointing straight forwards and backwards and high/low enough on the windshield to have a line of sight out the rear windshield.

I seen people mount it in the corner of their windshield pointing at BFE and they bitch non stop about it not working. Idiots. lol

Mondo- Nice, any noticeable difference in performance?

Nice thing about Escort, Know what what repair is needed, its a flat $60~ or something.

$300 - $500 for a radar detector?? The secret to beating speeding tickets is.... Show the man a lot of respect when he pulls you over and keep your mouth shut. Having a radar detector is a guaranteed ticket when you get pulled over. If that doesn't work get a lawyer. You can buy a lot of traffic lawyer time for that much money.
