Look guys, I need some advice, some input, some options... I have a pretty motor, with a fat ugly dirty fan on it... I dont wanna go electric, so Im wondering if anyone has any ideas for a nice trick fan... Its gotta move enough air, at least as well as the factory fan... Has anyone done this? Used a manual fan that isnt stock? post pics, if you can please...

Thanks,
Jake

Sorry, no pix. Just happened to think of it because I worked on a Yota (I think it was a Camry) recently that had one. It may be even what Johnathan is talking about since I'm not familiar with the 1J. Hydraulically Driven Fan System. Power steering return line drives a small hydraulic motor for the fan. Should be easy to retrofit.

So no one has tried any of those stainless metal fans? I used to have a really nice blue/polished flex fan on my old ford... It really livens the engine bay... Im looking for something that looks good, but moves as much or more air than the factory plastic fan...

I know which fans you're talking about Reign... I'm pretty sure someone over on SF is running one, I just can't find the thread though.

Something like this, right?

I remember seeing some kind of thread not on SM, but on some other site where a guy had a metalic chrome 6/7 blade fan on his 7m about a year ago and i haven't been able to find the thread ever since.

If some one could be the first, hopefully you Reign....Do a write up PLEASE!

I'm pretty sure it was the 1300 (blue) that I've seen on a 7M, just wish I could find the thread... it's been a while so it really could have been on any of the MKIII sites. If I track it down I'll post a link for you. I'd like to know how the airflow compares. What's the diameter of the stock fan?

BTW, What do those usually sell for? (Nevermind, the average is around $40 for a 17" or 18")

See, $40 isnt bad, especially for the look and quality... I think Im gunna buy one, even if it wont work, it would be worth trying... I know the center will have to be modified for the water pump, or a spacer will have to be made... The 1300 series fns are good for 10,000RPMs... I dont see why it wouldnt work... I'd like to do a weight comparison as well.... And I wouldnt mind doing a write up on this...

Flex-a-Lite makes anodized aluminum spacers. If you like it let us know, I've been thinking about trying one of those as well... it's just toward the bottom of my to-do list.

The next question is what are you going to do to clean up the fan clutch? Polish it, paint it (probably a bad idea) or replace it with a shiney new one?

1300s dont use a clutch... Its constant... They sell a clutch, but I wouldnt use the toyota clutch with it, I dont think it would even work... They sell these, but damn, look at the RPM they rate them for... 4000... I know when I put the flex a lite on my ford, I didnt use a clutch...

*now tell me why I need a clutch and how its bad to not have one, lol*:1zhelp:

I really don't know if it'll make any difference. I suppose that since those fans flatten out the faster they spin, without something to run them slower than the water pump, they'll be pulling less air through at a lower RPM than they would with the clutch. This is quite simply due to the blades flattening much sooner. Is that enough to make a difference? I really don't know.

Did any of that make sense? :icon_conf

OK....;)

As RPM increases the drive fluid allows the fan clutch to slip, increasing engine efficiency when less fan-assisted air movement is needed due to higher vehicle speeds. A direct drive is going to use more engine power at high rpm...not to mention the noise ;)

There's the danger the higher rpm of a direct drive will increase the stress on the fan due to the force exerted pulling air at that engine speed. The stock fan is plastic...you could easily exceed the structural limit of the fan and throw a blade...not good. If you use an aftermarket metal fan like you're talking about, the blades will bow at high rpm with a direct drive reducing efficiency and making the fan very loud. You will also need some sort of spacer to extend the fan into the shroud so the fan can pull the volume of air required for the radiator. Plus, the "flattening out" you mentioned is not going to happen really since the angle is fixed, but they will bow causing stress to the blades...note this comment from the link you posted:

Using other than a Flex-a-lite fan clutch in conjunction with this fan will void the warranty and may result in premature fan failure, serious damage to your vehicle, or serious personal injury.

The stock fan system is designed to be run with a clutch...aftermarket fan or not. IMO you're asking for problems...like we need another issue on the Supra cooling system. I would run the clutch, use FAL dual electric fans with a fan controller, or go for the hydraulic set-up.

Thank you thank you thank you... I've said it before, I know alot about these cars and these engines, but Im ALWAYS ready to learn more, so I truly appreciate the lesson... Thank you...

Ok, so if I go with one of these fans, I should look into getting a clutch as well...
