locating pins on Block

Hi guys,

1/. How do u remove the locating pins on the block without damaging them?

2/. Is there a good way to clean the water jackets in the block with the head off and engine in the car?

You can try pulling the dowels out using some vise grips with a towel or piece of dense rubber between the dowel and the jaws. I didn't have any luck with it and had to order new ones.

If you're just looking to flush out the block's coolant passages I found it easiest once the head was back on to remove the lower rad hose and fill the engine from the hose that connects to the head in the back and the thermostat housing with a garden hose. If you've got any large debris that dropped down in there I don't know how effective that will be.

you need a dowel pin remover set or a stud remove set works some times aswell.

there isn't any great way, but there's a coolant drain on the exhaust side of the block by the tranny if you open that you could take a presure washer to the coolant , be very careful,
i thought of this but didn't do it, i hot tanked my block.

I do not want to remove the block from the car.I had rebuilt it 2.5 years ago and its seems to be okay.

I know what you are talking about. I forgot the name...Those plugs on the block.I could remove them and wash the coolant passages and put in new plugs.

freeze plugs....

as for the dowel pins, they were relatively inexpensive. I don't think I paid more than $10 for two. I don't know where my receipts are at the moment though... the wife's been redecorating (aka, she's hidden all of my important stuff!!!).

Those pins are damn cheap. I picked up new ones from Toyota, I'm sure they were ~$1 each.

They aren't supposed to be reusable.

I just used a punch to pound them through into the water jackets, then used a magnet to get them back out.

Hehe, I wish I had known they could be knocked through... ugh. I had one break off clean. Fortunately, it seized when I was drilling it (with the intent of tapping it) and came right out.

Some people get lucky and they just pull right out, but I wouldn't count on it.

no i didn't mean the freeze plugs, i would have mentiond them. there is a funky nut with a bolt and hole in it, if you losen the bolt it will open like a drink spout, it's located around cylinder 6 on the exhaust side. farily low on the block. pop that and your lower rad hose and you should be able to pressure wash most the debree into other parts of you coolant system, and make it easier to flush it out.

D'oh! I know what you're talking about now. Yeah, that should work pretty well. I'd still flush it from the head once the head's back on too.
