Is this a worthwhile upgrade to do? How much horse power can I expect to gain? I live in the Vancouver area and would also like to know where there is a good reputable shop I can take my 90 Supra for upgrading and TLC?

Depends on the amount of boost and turbo you are going to run. IIRC 550's max out around 400 hp or so. Also remember to upgrade your fuel pump, and pick your self up some sort of piggy back at the same time.

I was thinking about doing this mod (550, lexus afm, walbro), when i do my HG. Might as well since i'll have the head off and more room to work with. I would be keeping the stock turbo, boost controlled to maybe 8 or 9lbs. That with hard IC piping and a full 3", i'd like to be close to 300.

if he was to get a piggy back wouldn't that defeat the need for the lexus afm?

If you get the afm, Make sure your head gasket is taken car eoff before you start turning up psi. have some 550's(rc is pro choice around here), wideband, safc, boost controller, exhaust (elbow back).

HP depends on what you do with the boost. Im at 12 pounds and don’t have a lexus afm, no 550, an dim making 328hp @ crank .

Set her to 14.7 lbs, And you should be getting in around 350/360 @ crank? I think.

Sweet, well if i can another member to second that motion then maybe i'll go that route. i can get the safc and BC pretty cheap, not sure about a wideband. The HG will be done before i touch boost, i'm sure of that.

unless you get a system like the maft pro with a map sensor you should get a lexus afm with 550's and a wideband if your going for like 300+.

wideband is key for tuning and not blowing your motor

Does the SAFC do the same job????

I too am upgrading to: Lex AFM, 550s, Walbro. I already have full 3" intake/exhaust, hard pipes and 60-1.

the Safc tunes your fuel, but the wideband actually shows the #'s (usually in a xx.x #) to whether or not you're running rich or lean. a wideband is an add-on to a fuel controller and shows what the balance of the a/f ratio due to the tinkering of an safc or another fuel controller.

if you have no way of monitoring your air/fuel ratio, then making adjustments with the controller is a gamble. unless u take it somewhere to get it tuned

so much disinformation in this thread...

Slap a lexus AFM and 550's in and you're basicly at stock AFR (if not a bit richer). It effectively raises boost cut to allow you to push more boost (you'd be at the same power levels if you didn't raise the boost).

Wideband isn't needed with this setup unless you want to lean it out some to get boost cut up even higher.

You don't HAVE to have 550 injectors if you're running a piggyback, but if the piggyback gets reset, the setup is inherently lean and you'll lose the motor. A good setup should run without danger of blowing up if everything gets reset IMHO as Murphy's Law is always there (and injectors are cheaper than fixing a melted piston!)

Poodles, what you're saying is that the lexus 550 combo is more stable as a way to gain horsepower and raise boost cut COMPARED to a SAFC with stock air/fuel parts? I'm not too informed about this lexus afm and 550 inj yet, wanted to know more. Thanks.

With the Lex/550 combo, it's good to have the safc and a wideband for tuning. Stock air/fuel components makes it hard to raise fuel cut, even with an safc. It mostly serves to tailor fuel to your upgrades. afaik.
