Ever since I got my supra the coolant level (bird cage) light has been on. Today I finally pulled out the reservior and cleaned the damn thing. I can actually see thru it now! Anyway, I tested the level sensor with an ohmmeter and it reads normal. (open circuit when up, ~4-5 ohms when down). The problem is, even after cleaning - water does not make it float.
Anyone ever have this problem?

jonathan1: NOT a wiring issue - I can make the light go on and off by moving the ring up and down

if the ring doesn't float then how does the sensor work?

Personally I just disconnected the sensor. It's of no use to me as I check my fluids at least once a week. Disconnected it will not throw the light.

True.
I certainly considered that - but I want everything to work. Maybe I could glue a foam ring to it?

If it's an up and down thing I would guess it should float. Maybe there is some foam or somthing missing from yours.. The TSRM does not go into details..

float is full of water! drain it, clean it, coat it in a thick layer of epoxy
Thank you!
But here is what really bugging me - Is the sensor designed to be removed easily? If I try and pull it out will I break it?

Update:
Pulled the coolant level sensor out of the tank today.
The float was heavily covered in dried glycol. After scraping it off, the float became lighter - but not enough to float. The core seems to be made of a solid, porous iron inpregnated substance so i couldn't drain it.

Sick of the whole thing - I cut up some packing foam and epoxy'd it to the top of float ring. Let it dry and trimmed it up. Baby works like a charm.
