I hope it's not a rodknock, I don't think it is because i've heard it on a few other vehicles and it just isn't clunky enough...my stepdad says it sounds like the valve lifters, but I don't know if he fully understands cars, let alone supras and 7m's.

it's a pretty loud tapping...i put a PVC pipe up against the engine and it sounds loudest from the front intake valve cover. I tried both valve covers on either end, and also tried what spots I could reach along the block and oil pan. It's definately loudest on the front of the intake cover, left side to be exact. The sound from the pipe reminds me of a big 3/4 ton diesel truck idling, in fact it sounds exactly like that. It seems to slightly quiet down past 4500 RPM, but never fully goes away, and gets loudest from 2500-3000 RPM....which from what I've read leads me to believe rodknock, but the loudest location just doesn't match up...being that it should be loudest near the oil pan for rod knock right?

The car is tuned to run pig rich because of the stock intercooler, and it has a full ferrea valvetrain installed if that helps to clear things up. Please put my fears to rest, because right now I can't stand the thought of a brand new knocking car!

edit: DOH! just realized I put this in general...somebody move it to 7m tech please!

thread moved. try this:

unplug one injector at a time, if the noise goes away when you unplug an injector, chances are, it's rodknock.

another way, turn car off, unplug one of the spark plug leads. start car. noise still there? turn car off, plug previous one back in, unplug another, start car. still there? continue. if the noise goes away, when you unplug one of them, chances are, it's rodknock.

Yes, mine does the same thing at the same RPM range.....mine sounds like loud tapping rather than "clunk clunk" (if that make sense). Glad I skimmed through the posts before putting a new thread up.

I've been paying attention to the oil preassure gauge and it has been in the safe zone, since I noticed the taps. I remembered reading about oil preassure in relation w/ rodknocks...please correct if wrong.:icon_conf

right, oil pressure seems to be alright...i haven't put the car under any sort of stress since I got it, only the occasional 15 minute idle to get the juices flowing. I just started noticing it a few weeks ago, and it's really starting to bug me.

I'll pull the plug wires tomorrow and see what happens...god forbid that noise should stop when I pull the front one

i think mine does that.. its a rapid clicking noise.. like click-click-click-click-click...i read before that its just the valves being a little loose and that its normal, nothing to worry about.
this is what rod knock sounds like..

yeah, it definately doesn't sound like that...it's just like that tick-tick-tick-tick sound. It's still annoying the crap out of me, so I think I'll look around for a good valvetrain shop to see what's up with it...i'm still a newbie when it comes to this whole internal combustion engine nonsense :3d_frown:

Congratulations! That's fucking bad!!!!

That's what my 2.8l S10 sounded like when a rod somehow blew through the pan at cruise around 2500rpm.
It still drove fine in the woods, and around my house... lol

alright good news...i hope. Pulled the plugs and the noise got a bit louder on the foremost one (#1), but didn't go away for any of them. I guess I can rest a little bit eaisier now that I know it's coming from the head somewhere.

I don't mean to dissapoint but IDK it seems to be its not an injector... normally you can hear them when your under the hood the noise is much faster then rod knock would be though since its for all 6. I'd say something the valve train. Just my .02.

Wingman, I hope you don't mind me sharing this thread, because I think there's a prob. w/ my 7m. :nono:

Shaeff, I tried the spark plug method but with the engine running. Sound remained on the 1st through the 5th engine, however, it goes away when I unplugged the 6th engine. I've stayed consistent by revving each time gradually to 3K RPM, noticed that the ticking sound starts ~ 1.5K - 2.5K.

I had also taken a clip of it, but file was too big so I ripped the audio part only. Hope this will help you guys to help me (and others).

i don't mind at all...were all here trying to fight the great evil that is the 7m hammer gnome. The noise under my hood sounds NOWHERE near as loud as that...it almost blends in with the engine noise itself it's so quiet. It does sound a lot like that little gnome is having a jolly time in your bottom end though :(

Man, that sucks....I just recent bought it, too (because it was affordable, then)...It was completely stock w/ HG done last year....I didn't start to notice until I swapped every performance parts from my dead '88 turbo (see sign). I guess my situation is similar to yours, but worse. Oy!

On the other hand (don't know how long it'll last), this thing boosts and takes off like WHOA! It was almost as fast as my '88 even in stock form!

LexingtonBlue, I have almost the exact same symptoms. Mine "ticks/clicks" around 2k-3k but doesn't seem *quite* as loud as yours, although it's hard to tell from just a computer sound clip. Pull #6 and the noise goes away.

I've heard of another guy having problems with #6 ticking and it turned out to be the EGR leaking, so all hope may not be lost... yet. I haven't checked my EGR yet b/c it's a bitch to get too and it's too cold here now.

EGR? Where is it located? And, what does it do?

BTW, I just checked my spark plug rail and......it's flooded with OIL! What the fork??!?!

I don't know what it's called, but when I pulled the sparkplug wires, looked down and saw that it's flooded with oil. I can only see the tip of the sparkplugs
