Hello everyone, Ed.T here. I'm posting this from my BlackBerry on the 5 freeway here in San Diego. I'm waiting for a flatbed at the moment so I've got a few minutes to spare.

I'll keep it short for battery reasons.

Was going up the onramp in what I believe was 3rd gear. Car was boosting whatever Ed.D has currently set at. Ed.D goes to shift when I hear the car rev instead of going into gear. He never misses, so something must be up. I look at the shifter and notice it's not going anywhere, and the car is still coasting at 60ish.

So now, the shifter is more or less in 'neutral' between gears 3&4, stuck. Car still coasts, and may be missing a slave cylinder. We're not sure as of yet. Updates will follow once we get the car towed, and then onto a lift to inspect the damage.

For a second I thought you were speaking in third person, but then realized that Jay wasn't reading the names correctly and Jay wasn't comprehending what Ed.T was saying.

Good luck and I hope it's nothing major. Good luck to Ed.D that never misses a gear also.

Sucks man..hopefully its nothing really bad..and really expensive..but it kinda sounds like something broke in the tranny.

i noticed that the tranny was in forth gear yet the motor ran like it was in neutral. i wasnt able to shift. stuck. but the linkage felt like it was still intact. ill be heading to the jjunk yard to find a replacement tranny and hopefullly 935 has a clutch set up on hand so i can get back to work.

ive got some pics of the car last night while getting loaded on to the flat bed that ill post later on when i get the time. also ill take snap shots as replace the tranny. so atleast you guys know what happened.

Haha, sorry. I was kinda blasted when I typed that, being 5am in the morning and freezing my butt off on the highway. I would've gone about making my own SM account but I was too lazy since Ed.D is my roommate and there's no sense in having multiple accounts when I spend most of my time researching and enjoying the VIP section, :naughty:

As for an update: Ed.D is running around the Tijuana section of southern California grabbing the R154 tranny, then followed by a trip to Robert's @ 935 to grab himself a clutch. We should have the car up tonight and get started to see what exactly is going on in the 2J'd Mk3.

for an update

i found an R-154 of an 87 turbo with 120,xxx miles. no grinds or sticking for $150 dollars and a 30 day return.

stopped by 935 robert and purchased a Competition Clutch 6 puck. it should hold until i find a better replacement.

also stopped by Kragen and grabbed a lot of engine cleaner.

if anyone has any good tips to braking in this clutch it'll be well appreciated.

Quick update, we've just pushed the 2J into the driveway and started cleaning up the R154 that was purchased at the junkyard. The photo quality sucks since it's from my phone.

Ed.T: "Quick! Stick the car in neutral for pushing!"
Ed.D: "...yousonuvabitch."

Here's the donor:

-
The watermelon green garage. The thing in common with these 3 Supras? They currently don't move.

-
That blurb in the back from last night would be the tow truck driver. Props to him for getting the lowered car up so we could get it back.

More to follow as we clean up the donor tranny and get under the car.

That sucks...that tranny had around 90k miles :( . You guys sure its the tranny or just getting the car going and looking at the cause later?

As of right now the goal is to get the car moving until we can fully diagnose what exactly happened with the clutch. Once we swap out the R154s I'm going to double check to look into everything since the 2j is Ed.D's daily.

edit* the old tranny grinded a lot. and getting into reverse was not so easy. so throw a good working tranny with no grinds and a new clutch set up and viola! no more worrying about what the problem might/could be. replace the whole thing and its fixed.

kool. I've heard good stuff about MTL -90 in the tranny. Heard it makes it shift smooth and no grinds. May wanna refill it with that . The disk it had before was unsprung so it was a bit harsh and not great for a DD that's for sure.

over time i've gotten used to the unsprung disk. yes it definately was harsh on the drive train especially on a stop light uphill.

as far as the gear is concerned, im going to be using the conventional gear oil to clear the internals of the tranny. having it sit in the elements at a junk yard for months has put osme dirt in the tranny through the shifter. when i get the dirt free from the walls and floating around i'll be using the MTL-90 to get it set in.

im planning to head to the garage in a bit to loosen the engine mounts and remonve the tranny mounts so swapping will be easier.

Ed.T with an update.

Windows were pulled and nothing looked out of the ordinary, except for the clutch release cylinder needing a new rubber boot. We followed up by pulling the tranny without a lift, but raised it up on some heavy duty jacks. There's an incredible amount of room due to the presence of the 2J swap, but I'd prefer only to have to do this once.

First inspection of the R154 is showing that the shifter is... well, stuck. Looks to be locked in place between 3rd and 4th gear. Right now we've switched out the unsprung clutch and pressure plate. The plate is warped, and the clutch isn't shredded, but it's getting switched out. Fork checks out ok, flywheel is jacked up too. I'll edit in a few pics once I complete a file transfer. Either way, it appears that the current R154 is going to get opened up for a thorough inspection.
