Laptop power jack repair?

Hey.

A few years ago I paid a local shop about $300 to repair the power jack on my laptop. (Sony Vaio GRX550)

Recently (year+) it's back to being messed up... not charging or powering the laptop. (Knocked loose I suppose.)

Is it possible to have a shop directly wire the power supply jack from my adapter straight to the motherboard/messed up jack?

What would you recommend.

Sounds like a bad solder. Instead Id have someone resolder it to the board internally (the jack itself) and then wire another wire from it to the board as a jumper incase it comes loose again. I did this to an old Sega Nomad I used to have, same problem, this fixed it.

haha thanks, I was kinda a bad solder'er when I was a kid, so I fullproofed my dumbass haha.

Yeah thats it bro. Not that hard, but resolder that bitch on there, should solve the issue. Clean all the old solder off first. You heat it to melt then use a desoldering braid. Then toss on what I said and your good to go.

BTW from looking, thats definitely what happened the first time u had it repaired. Thats NOT factory solder on there.

I found out a while ago that sony has a return program. You pay a flat rate which i don't remember and they fix everything. Mine needed a new DVD burner and a new HD which were both replaced for less then it cost to buy new parts.

All solder is, think of it just as an easily meltable metal that conducts electricity. When it comes off or disconnects, that spot is no longer conducting, thus no more charge. You just remove the solder and use NEW solder to make a conection between the metal surface of the board that piece lays on, and the back of the piece with the metal sticking out of it... on that, should be a tiny metal strip right now looks hidden by the solder.

The only thing I don't see (hard to) is where it's trying to be connected to, and where it's broken.

The Red wire represents the placement of the jumper wire. BTW!!!!! Thats NOT connecting to that little silver box, thats going BEHIND IT, DO NOT CONNECT THOSE.

I drew up an overhead view in PS of what I mean, I can get more elaborate if you needed, this was just a simple way of explaining...

I think I'll try removing the old solder first with that solder removing braid? (I'll have to see what that is)

Then the jumper if it still isn't working.

Bought a new Vaio instead! :rofl:

P4 dual core processor.


Looks like I'm going to get my old vaio fixed, then "permanently" place it in the kitchen somewhere, so the power jack won't break anymore.
