Lapping advice!!!

Since I took on this chore of lapping the block I have to give advice to fellow members that if they ever decide to do such a thing this would help.
First off if you send ur block to the machine shop write in paper such as I exactly what u want as i did.
Second once u get the block back and see thats the only thing they didnt do CUSS at them. They decked my block but got it as smooth as they can. Not their problem i understand it. But I told them exactly how i wanted the surface. I even said no pitting. well i've been lapping for about 30 minutes a day for a month straight. Although the block was smooth enough after a few times the pitting is still there. all on the intake side. So its been a month with little result.
my advice is. If you see pitting even if you are using stock hg take the block back and cuss out the machinist after you get it back. I would have took it back but they have a 1 year waiting list since they are the only machine shop in town(thanks Katrina) and I dont have a year. Its been almost 3 months and they still have my timing cover.
Maybe I should have went BPU++ 1jz... :biglaugh:
Naw i love my 7M

Justin: You do realise now you've built in a BHG at the timing case as it will be higher than the block! :(

Lapping is just for surface smoothness NOT to remove pitting that's what the cutters at the machine shop are for.

yea i know about the timing cover. Thats why he has it. It wouldnt fit on the machine while on the block. He has measure and will cut it to fit for free for me. Thats why its still there.

Well Ian I mean it has removed some pitting but not without time. Its taken a while....

A little RTV would fill up any slight gap, no?
As long as you let it cure properly, I can't see why it wouldn't work.

Brent: Lapping should only be taking the highs off and not changing the height at all, in Justin's case he's trying to remove material to get rid of pitts and I bet while it's smooth it's not flat anymore :(

as you change directions you have to apply uneven pressure to it Justin!

I'm not trying to rain on your parade here but if it were me I'd take it to another shop tell them it has to be as smooth as possible make sure they understand this 100% and have it and the cover cut at the same time.

Bring it home give it a very light Lap if you must and be done with it.
