Well we talked aboiut many things, I mean how would you guys like to retire at 40, Hell I would! Jump out of planes (airborne). Run around shooting M16A2. No taxes FTMFW! Dont have to pay rent. Invest Invest Invest is what I am thinking. Just not 100% sure if I am going to go! Still got to talk it over with parents and g/f. What do you guys have to say?

It's not for everybody, but if you want to do it, more power to you. Retiring at 40 is something alot of people will never get to experience. I'm 36 and see no retirement in sight. Good luck...............lol

why wouldnt you get sent over? its not getting better by any means

Well things are actually getting more stabilized over there. There will be people over there until 2010 they are predicting. But hell, getting sent over is definately the last thing I want. But what are the odds of getting killed or something along the lines of that. I cant see myself as infantry (talking about the guys who run around on the ground with their M16A2's or ride around in Humvees, which are damn near indestructible. All what is killing us is the roadside bombs and the IDs those little bastards have set up. I dont know if its called IDs i dont think so but its something along those lines. LOL

Now suprahero, Retiring at 40 is one thing. But I would have a hell of an experience going in the army,air force,navy,marines, anything for that matter. Going to 20+ countries. WOOT!

be safe if you do decide to go man. i guess the thing that really freaked me out about this war is that more of our soldiers have died in iraq than in vietnam

Yes but in civilian life you have a choice whether you want to drive a car don't you?
The military they send you and you have to go.

That's not the point. The point is that, statistically, you have a better chance of getting killed in a car wreck while in the states then you do getting killed in Iraq.

Yes, it is the point you don't HAVE a choice of where you are sent in the military do you?
You can't compare semantics then say it's invalid. I can choose to stay in my house for the rest of my life. Tell me I can choose to stay on a base in the military.
I'm not trying to dissuede him, and if you are going to compare driving statistics you're going to have to have an amount of numbers that can be compared, i.e. 1 car = 1 soldier. Then show me statistics.

Best of luck and God bless if you decide to go for it, but don't approach it like the chances of injury/death are miniscule because they're not...I hate to see people get into it and not know the reality of what's involved over there

It's easy not to get sent in the military, it's also easy to go if you want.

<edit in>

I deployed in support of Noble Eagle, Enduring Freedom, and Southern Watch. I had no problems going, so I went. The last deployment I would have went on I didn't want to because I didn't feel like being away from Meg (meggs521), so I didn't. Its not that hard to get onto or off of a deployment rotation

<edit in>

If you don't know what you're talking about, please shut the fuck up.

Alright guys THX for all of the input. I am really considering this though. The only reason I am debating on going is missing people back at home and getting sent over to war. Even if I do get sent over, I will not be in infantry, but airborne sounds like a plan though. So I shouldn't have to many worries of being in a dangerous position. Idk maybe Im wrong but I think this is probably the best way for me to go. I mean it definately beats paying 40k for 5-10 years after I graduate. So what the hell, college expenses up to 37,000 which is the least that is offered. But anyways all of the other experiences and shit that I will be enjoying. Get 1200 a month to start out with, Start my IRA ROTH in April when I turn 18. Have a CD as of now 5.40%. Doesnt mature in another 17 months but hey INVEST is the best thing besides supras! No rent,no bills,etc. Crazy!!!!! GOAL to retire a millionaire. I can see it happening. I mean how many of you knew what the hell mutual funds,stock,NAS,DOW,S&P 500,shares,IRAs (Roth and Traditional) when you were 17? Well Ive done my homework. Thats all I have to say, but wish me luck.

I do believe we have an all volunteer military, so you actually do have a choice. If you've joined the military, then you've already chosen to accept the risk of being sent over there or anywhere else in the world. No one is twisting your arm, making you join.

Still have to file taxes and all that jazz, and I'm pretty sure the M4 has/is going to replace the M16. And you forgot the best part about the military, TRAVEL!! (well if you're single) Next December I go active duty and I can't freaking wait to travel.
