Hello guys...

I know that our motors has two different kinds of sensors... Green and gray.
I read somewhere that one is wideband (reads all frequencies) and another is narrow-band (reads only bore-specific knock frequency)... Is it true?

If so, what is narrow-band? (green or gray)

Or may be you can recommend narrow-band KS from another car with knock frequency about 6.8kHZ (84mm bore).

Thanks!

as far as I know that's bs

The green is from 86-88 cars and the grey is from 89+

I could be out to lunch, but I think not.

If you're talking about the actual knock sensor connector, they're ALL green. ;)

The "green" KS and "grey" KS found on the different year cars (as Justin said) are the same. The highest voltage output is at 7 kHz. Toyota did use two types of KS for this generation TCCS EFI cars...one generates high volatage over a narrow vibration band, the other generates high voltage over a wide range of vibration.

The problem is I can't remember which type was used on the 7M...I want to say it's the NB type, but don't hold me to it ;)

Thank you for info!

It's all about ignition timing map... Dyno time is very expensive here and I constantly change parts, so need to retune often. That's why I road-tune my engine.
I'm using Link Knock Block with headphones to listen engine, but there is a lot of noise at higher RPM, so I'm afraid not to listen pinging... That's why I'm looking for means to minimize mechanical noise (narrow band sensor).

When I'll get all parts to build another engine, I'll try to push limits... Run more advance to get ping and hear how it sounds... But once again, I want sound to be as clear as possible.

BTW, I've found that device recently:
http://www.phormula.co.uk/Player.as... - KS-3 Knock Analyser and Knock Analyser Pro
and it looks better than KnockBlock for knock monitoring and listening.

Well, actually I haven't money for that solution =( May be I'll get just KS3 and try to use it in junction with Knock Block (I already have).
Anyhow, when I find good working tool for det. listening during road tuning, I'll post some info.

Shaeff - I've seen green plastic used on the knock sensors. I assumed it was from the earlier motors, but could be wrong on that. The grey plastic is much more common though. In any case, it doesn't matter...they are the same.

^ Seriously? I have yet to see a harness with any other color than green. But you're right, it doesn't matter!

Yeah, a kind of puke lime green...and that's on the sensor itself, but most are a dark grey color. On the harness side, I have NFI.

Weird. Maybe I got all mutant harnesses, because the actual connector harnesses that I've seen were all green. Oh well, not really an issue. :)

I love knock sensors. They conveniently retard the timing should they detect detonation/pre-ignition. They enrich the fuel mixture, should they detect the aforementioned.

Hell, I'll take a few quirks (likely due to faulty wiring) if it saves my motor from exploding. Thank you Code 52!

Knock sensors are kinda like "explosion detectors" in the cargo hold of an airliner though...they detect it and you're already screwed ;)
