Knock Sensors and TPS Question

The check engine light is on in my supra and i ran the codes. I got the knock sensors and tps codes. Could one sensor be effecting the other, meaning something being wrong with the knock sensors setting off the tps or the other way around?

And where is the rear knock sensor located? I was told the front one is on the left side of the block somewhere near the turbo. Is this correct?

No that is not correct.

Both knock sensors are underneath the lower intake mani. Its a common problem for the wiring of the knock sensors to go bad in with this vehicle (same deal with the CPS).

Codes should have nothing to do with eachother.

As for TPS code, you may have a sticky TPS. Pull it and make sure the spring acuator works very well. Manually twist the inner part to find the two extremities and make sure the spring takes it back as far as possible. if the spring doesn't work like it should, just replace, its probably very old and may have 'dead zones/spots' anyway; they are only like $60-80 at any autozone/advanced/pepboys

ok. thank you.

Is there a certain type of wire that I should use to re-wire the knocks?

^more insulation the better. The knock sensors also use a thicker gauge wire than most of the other components/sensors. Someone on here may know better than I, like JetJock or something. Also, im not sure where the wires typically fail, i just know it happens. Again, someone else can probably enlighten you that may have had this issue

I might be an idiot for asking this. But I dont know the answer to this. Will the Knocks effect my top-end power? The guy I bought the car from said that there's a newly rebuilt 3.73 LSD which if I'm not mistaken is the turbo diff so I should have top-end, but I have a hard time hitting 120mph. It feels like the motor is straining to get there.

Having Code 52 will kill all your power. LOL. The car will feel incredibly sluggish. This happens because when Code 52 is registered, the TCCS (ECU) retards timing and enriches the fuel mixture in an effort to prevent pre ignition/detonation.

So short answer; your car will have no top end power with the KS code set.

Well that explains why my car runs like sh*t! Thanks Shaeff. Ive been trying to figure out where all my power was because I use to have a completely stock 1987 turbo targa with a blown headgasket that would murder my current supra!

I've always had good luck w/ rg58 coax cable, often used for HAM radios and CB's. Solid copper core, strong insulation. Holds up very well. But, there are better options for a bit more money. (Check out Belden Wires)

Update.........
New issue I found. My knock sensors might be ok. Problem is, theyre not wired at all. Im assuming there is suppose to be a wire or something going from the sensors to the engine wiring harness but there is nothing. Theyre just screwed in the block with nothing attached. Can I just wire them to the ecu and ground (temporary fix) or do I need to just buy a new harness with the plugs already attached?

Most people just do it right the first time, and buy some good coax to do it. They don't really need a ground, the ground is simply to ground out electrical interference so it doesn't effect the signal to the ECU.

But short answer, yes. Use coax, put it in a wire loom to protect it, buy new connectors from the dealership.

What is a wire loom? Do I wire the 2 knocks together and then run a wire to the ecu or wire them separately to the ecu? How do I know where to plug the wire into the ecu? (if you cant tell, im just getting into the mechanical business) :1zhelp:
