TYPO MEANT TO SAY CODE 52!!! IN THE TITLE

ive been searching for a few mins and couldn't find anything that i could use for information..

I have my 88 turbo 5spd that is being kind of weird.. heres my series of questions...

1) if a knock sensor is "dead"[not working] at what point will it draw timing?

2) my CEL only comes on after exceeding a certain RPM or when i try to boost.

3) Correct me if im wrong but the Knock sensor will draw timing if: spark plugs are bad / fuel injectors dirty causing pinging?

My car feels like its dieing when i try to boost, and i get the CEL.. but i dont have a knock.. not even a faint knock.. my question is.. will the knock sensor do this if the unit itself is dead? Or do i potentially have some other cause..

I'm looking for someone to direct me where i can learn about why this is happening, and also so i can repair it.

Thanks guys.

if the knock sensors are throwing a code it pulls timing and makes your car a honda... haha. not to mention the ecu goes into limp mode because its one of those codes.

get some working knock sensors, swap one out, see if problem goes away, or it may be the wiring...

check your sparkplugs though, sometimes you cant hear the knock.

do i have to remove intake manifold to get to the sensor?

shouldnt, just have to be flexible. if not, you can always go from underneath to look at them... but my car is different, cause i have my alternator relocated, and i made a custom crank case hose, so i have a ton more room than most people... but its doable. just be patient and make sure everything is on right.

i have small agile hands and arms.. so it shouldnt be an issue.. ill check the wiring first thing in the morning.. still havent felt the full potential of my car =(

Pull the ecu plug, look for the transparent wires, they are the ones that go to the knock sensors.
Measure resistance from there to the knock sensor connectors, you'll be able to measure if you have a broken line.

If it all measures through fine, try replacing the knock sensor, start with the front one, it's easiest. Getting to the rear one is harder, but a good elbow joint on a ratched with the correct socket will do the job without having to pull the starter.

It was impossible for me to replace the rear knock sensor without loosening the starter at the least. I ended up pulling the intake upper part for more room. Secured the wiring cause mine was all rigged by the previous owner.

If it throws the code again I'll be checking the wiring etc. My knock sensor was physically cracked at the plug but held up.

well today i looked into it further and it was actually my timing that was causing the knock.. im rewiring the knock sensors properly again as i ripped it all out to try and see wtf was up.. so i checked timing and it was WAY off..gotta find me a timing gun to get it done exactly.. and i got a voltmeter to adjust the TPS..

adjusted the cps and took it for Drive and it actually spools up and pulls pretty damn hard now :evil2: im gunna get in trouble in this thing.. especially with 5 yr expired tags =)

Keep in mind that engine knock does not cause a code 52. It's either the wiring or the sensor(s).

Please point out exactly where this code is that states it's specifically the knock sensor(s) that are failing:

As Jdub stated- Code 52 means that the wiring or the sensor(s) have failed. 90% of the time, it's the wiring. Here's a great writeup to use:

http://www.supras.com/06/techcenter/display.php?QID=69

Make sure you get the new connectors from Toyota, it's worth it to be working with all new parts. Code 52 will pull timing, and enrich fuel mixture in an effort to prevent detonation.

There will be NO code 52 if you have detonation/pre-ignition. When the knock sensors work, they're pretty much invisible.

Well I used the the 1995 tsrm because i have a 1jz and the schematics of the 2j and 1j are about the same .. and in bold on that page it states clearly knock sensor wiring... I rewired the sensors bypassed the harness and bingo good to go :)

So you proved my point. :)

And, exactly when did an '88 Supra come with a 1J or 2J motor?
(especially when posted in the 7M-GTE Tech Section)

Nomad - If you PM Shaeff, I'm pretty sure he still makes a quality knock sensor re-wire kit ;)
