So it looks like i have rod Knock going on with my 7mgte. :3d_frown: Which i dont understand why since i got some work done on the engine not to long ago. New head, head gasket, piston rings, ect. Now whats better to do, re built my engine and this time at least go with a metal head gasket and some arp head studs or go 1j, 5 speed swap? now im doing this trought out a mecanic shop i wana see whats more better as far as money wise to. Is rod Knock expencive to fix, is it even worth fixing?
thanx all

All depends upon your plans. You can have your engine rebuilt, it wouldn't cost you a mint if you did most of the work yourself. It will, however cost you a ton more if you keep driving it.
If you want to be a quitter and go 1jz, that's an option too :p

C'mon now grim. You're not thinking of selling out are you!? ;)

To OP: As long as you're crank is ok, you could get by with just replacing the bearings.

Run it a day or two at the most on rod knock pushing redline & you will put a piston through the block #5,#6 is the 7Ms favorite I have lost ~3 engines to rod knock My brother 2 Mason 1. All cars were maintained oil changes levels good synthetic 10-30 castrol babied the engines just tried to rev it and drive it like a street bike too much and you find the weak point in a high on the stroke curve engine.

Seen you post this "info" a couple of times now like it's carved in stone....

7M's DON'T RK without a reason, I ran mine damn hard and at high rpm for long top end pulls managed .95g lateral G loads and NEVER looked even close to getting RK.

My first supra got rod knock shortly after I got it. I caught it early enough that I was able to replaced just the rod bearings. I then drove the car for a year+ without any issues. I drove it like I stole it too. Street races, autocross, etc...

Also, I dropped the subframe and did everything from underneath. Most folks will say that pulling the engine is easier; but, found that dropping the subframe was less work.

Understand that depending on how long and hard you drove it with it knocking will determine if you can get away with just replacing the rod bearings.

In most cases, rod knock = rebuild.

you just did the head gasket which means water mixed with oil and toasted your bearings. rk solved in your case.

My cousin fixed his. Yea, after the head gasket job you should have flushed it as many times as you can. Well, he had access to a lift so it took him about 4-5 hours but he fixed it and it was worth it. If you have time and guts to be on your back the whole time and do it then go for it. Or if you really want to then pull the motor and might as well freshen it up, might also want to go r154 at the same time :)

yeah i know what you guys mean i just dont know what to do, i kinda dont want to spend more money on something that is not going to give me a good out put. On the other hand in a way i want to keep what i have so, its difficult to chose. Iv done some reaserch and found that what ever i do( 7m or 1j), its kinda the same amount because i im also thinking of going r154

I would stay with your current engine and replace the bearings, a 1j swap would take more time and money, especially if you're not doing the work yourself...they don't just drop in, there's more work involved...

Although as CajunKenny said, you may or may not be able to get away with just replacing the bearings...a full rebuild would give you full peace of mind and many years of reliable service, if done right. My 7M just blew its headgasket, no rod knock yet but it seems to be a pretty bad BHG so i'm sure it's done some damage, and I definitely plan on rebuilding it rather than swapping it out.
