If I’m not mistaking Bob the oil guy has a link showing just how much dirt a K&N Air Filter lets thru and does not recommend them. So I wouldn't imagine their oil filters are much better, their just great at advertising. I also read either here or another site that the FIPK actually reduced horsepower on a dyno run over a stock air filter. I put a k&n air filter in my 94 318 dodge van that I use to tow my scooters and noticed on the first trip up the Cajon pass a reduction in HP causing me to slow all the way down to 50mph. I had been able to cruise up it with cruise control set at 60mph, my mileage also sucked big time the last two trips with the k&n. So back to WIX everything for me just as Bob the oil guy recommended.

Most people know how bad the air filter is designed.... Got any info on their oil filter? That's kinda like comparing Apples to Ourangatangs.

Matt, dont use it. I have seen MANY come thru my work and the majority of them leak. Its not really "High Performace," Its just expensive. I use an OEM filter, its not bad but i change my oil every 2,500 miles. Mobil one filters are great, combine that with the Mobil one oil or AMSOIL. Thats a freaking win right there. Im jsut too cheap to use the synthetic, and the car has been on conventional all its life.

Also, look into TX-7 its a teflon baised sealant, fills in all the imperfections in the motor and seals up the rings.

hope that helps!

Wix filters are sold at car quest, and I think I saw someone here say napa filters are wix also, but I'm not sure of that. As far as the oil filters go, the apple and oranges comment can be put to rest using the link to Bob the oil guys site and looking at his testing done on oil filters.

i change my k&n filter with pretty much every oil 6 quart oil change every 2500 miles, i know im blowing allot of money but i've accepted the fact that the gas i run is more expensive and so is the lube, you pay to play. With that filter and mobil 10w40 my oil never gets any darker than maple syrup.

This is a tangent but if you want the factory oil filters, they are the ones with orange colored rubber, not black. A good dealer can get them for you.

That's a good question. People in the know never change their oil until it's time. Some never do it at all, relying instead on filter changes and make up oil. Here's another quote from the study:

"Indeed, one is forced to wonder whether an engine with a high-quality PAO synthetic combined with a bypass filtration system and regular filter changes would ever need its oil changed at all."

There is a lot to know about this stuff and wear metals are not the end all be all when deciding to change oil but I was struck by someone who actually believes he's doing the right thing by dumping a Goup IV PAO oil at 2500 miles. Not only is it a total waste of an oil (and money) that is capable of so much more but it's also damaging to the engine. This is just one example of how ignorant most people are about automotive tribology. I've pretty much given up on trying to educate them though. It's why I didn't say anything about the K&N filter.

In case it isn't obvious yet this means that the most engine wear occurs in the first 3,000 miles. Engine wear *decreases* as oil ages. This has been proven time and again, substantiated in testing conducted by Ford Motor Co. and ConocoPhillips, and reported in SAE Technical Paper 2003-01-3119: "What it means is that compulsive oil changers are actually causing more engine wear than those who don't".
To add to that, those that know, I am a big factory man. Very few things are superficial, and drivetrain wise, nothing is.

Your owners manual stipulates 7500 miles, or something obscene like that for oil changes. With heavy stop and go traffic, it is cut in half. Actually the truth is, "harsh conditions" is not defined. The GTE is 1000 less than the GE from the extra heat.

I personally do not do 3/3000 religiously, I do it more when it gets black, like a diesel power plant. That is usually around 5000 miles. The more research you do on the subject, the more you will find the 3/3000 just isnt correct.

My procedure after break-in is always to change the filter religiously every 2500, but only drain the pan every 10k. I've had very good results with this, running Syntec 5W50, though now I'm running Mobil 5W30 after a rebuild at 215k. The engine was in excellent shape for 215k; it was the dreaded BHG that made me rip it apart. Since I didn't buy the car new, I can't say if the minor scoring on the crank was my fault or not, but the pressure was as high at 215k as it was at 45k. It's always been my theory that syntho oil is great; it's the filter that fills up first. We all know what low oil flow will do.

However, I did need new valves and guides at 215k because they were worn past the limit.

Just my experience.

BTW, the Purolator 30001 is the filter of choice for me.
