JZA70 Rad

It looks like the previous owner of the 1990 JZA70 I bought (for my 1JZ swap) replaced the radiator with a non-stock one. I can't find a temp sensor in it anywhere. What does this look like in the radiator and / or what does the plug look like?

I have no idea how long this was run this way. What kind of bad stuff could happen by doing this?

First, the temp sensor is located on the driver side, lower end of the radiator side tanks.

Secondly, are you even running a Hydro fan setup? If you are not, then its not needed.

Also, I found from previous experience that even if the temperature sensor is not plugged in, if you plug in just the Hydro fan ecu , it will spin the hydro fan at speed. I never had any overheating this way . They sensor regulates the fan speed at different H2) temps only.

Thanks for the feedback. This is running the hydrofan and I want to keep it for my swap. The question now is, how can I get that temp based control back into the mix? I'm guessing running the fan on full all the time may not be the best idea...

well, the fan is hydro controlled. If you have the hydrofan cooler in the mix, it should not be a problem.

To get it in the mix, you will need to get a JZA70 specific radiator - Koyo sells then and they have a bung for the sensor. You can use a similar sensor from other toyotas as long as it does the same thing. ( i forogt which car I picked mine off)
iF you want to keep the same radiator, you can buy a coolant hose adapter that connects inlinewith the radiator coolant hose and it allows you to screw in a temperature sensor.They are about 30- 40 dollars. Then you just have to make sure the sensor wire can reach it.

Is this a jza70 Supra?? The sensor harness is a plug similar to the one on the water neck for the H20 sensor there. It will be located on the drivers side probably hangin low or bundled up with the wires from the EA2 connector. ( its a two wire plug)

The hydro fan temperature connector is a brown, round 2 prong plug, with a brown and a turquoise wire. They will be hanging down around near the A/C compressor, as that's where the sensor usually sits, in that corner of the rad.

Like was said, get a Koyo rad, it will have the appropriate bung for the sensor. Alternatively, you can weld a bung onto a metal pipe, and place it in the upper rad hose pretty easily.


If you haven't already, I suggest you check out the Alberta Supra Club website too. Just mentioning it, as the "for sale" section has random stuff like this for sale from time to time.

just an FYI

if you buy a OEM 7M radiator, either off of a parts car or yota ( NOT A REPLACEMENT FROM AUTO ZONE OR SOMEWHERE ELSE HAS TO BE OEM) the temp sensor for the hydrofan screws right into the Drain plug on the Stock 7M radiator.

Ya, I found that plug and it wasn't hooked to anything...

Any thoughts on where to get a sensor? I'm sure there are used ones around, but is there an OEM or equiv part that outputs the same?

the Toyota Camry 94 and above has the same sensor. Please correct me if i'm wrong. I know the Camry uses the same sensor but i can't remember the years

if it helps i got a hydrofan ecu out of a v6 camry from 92-96 i believe so im assuming the hydrofan sensor would also be compatible as well. just a guess though

Actually the Camry's don't have a separate sensor. i think they run off the regular water temperature which should work. I have scoured a few junkyards and found no sensors located on their radiators. only ones I have seen are on the head/water neck. and that should work.
