CTS is Coolant Temperature Sensor. TTS is Thermo Time Switch. And yes, if either are busted it could cause hard starting because the ecu also has control over the cold start injector. Who is in control depends on the temperature. Between 20 and 40C the ecu will run the CSI for a max of 3 seconds. It uses the CTS to decide. Below 20C the TTS comes into play. It also uses the coolant temp but does so in a different way. It has a max on time of about 8 seconds but it'd have to be mighty cold for that to happen.

Btw, a bad TTS will not cause a code 22 so you still must have a problem in the CTS. And send your old TPS to me...it may not be bad and I could use a spare ;)

TTS won't set any code. Not monitored. You say the sensor on top of the housing is broken and that should be the TTS. But you also say you had a code 22. That would be the CTS (which is monitored) so something is goofy

Understand, there may be differences in T stat housings between model years I'm not aware of but the CTS should have a green connector. Bottom switch? Usually for the AC fans or for AC cutout on high temp.

what code would a tts throw? also what is the switch on the bottom of the housing?
i was lookin and code 51 is also for a/c, i dont have any a/c components, connectors hooked up. this could be the reason for code 51? if so maybe my tps is fine. what do ya think?

Mike, there are lots of posts that cover this (one of which I just posted today) but no, if you don't have AC it won't be the cause of code 51.

It's easy to check your TPS and CTS, either on the car or off. Search todays posts for advice or read the manual. No manual? For shame. Look at the one online and after go buy one. It'll answer everything you asked and more.

Prescott: great place btw....

i have a repair manual for '72 through '92 supra and the book tells me that code 22 is coolant temp. sensor signal, 51 is air conditioner switch or neutral start switch signal and 52 is a knock sensor signal (1985 and later models only)

Since I think it's fine you should do as I asked and send it to me ;).

I've already told you what to do. Several times. Test the TPS using either a your own manual or the online one. It's not difficult to do. Or search the forum for other TPS posts. If you don't own a manual and intend to keep the car go out and buy one, a real Toyota one. I can't help you if you won't help yourself.

I think he means it is available at the Toyota dealer, not a haynes book.
