I just picked up an 87 mk3 on saturday. Its a turbo targa. I paid $750. The previous owner had run the car out of oil and put a rod through the block. I already have another 7MGTE on the stand that I was given by a friend. I pulled the head yesterday and have an HKS metal head gasket on the way. The body is nearly perfect, but the clear coat is shot. Gonna paint it after I change the motor. I've been browsing the forum for a couple days and figured its time to say hello.
Here's the car being delivered:

Thanks. I hadn't planned on doing any machine work, but I will look into finding a place to do it tomorrow. Any Idea how much they will charge?

I guess this means i have to strip the block and head down the bare castings? The motor was recently rebuilt so I was gonna leave all that stuff alone, but im sure the reason the head gasket failed was because they didnt do that the first time around.

Really? Is midnight blue a rare color? I was considering painting it black, but maybe I should keep it original. I have an 88 thunderbird that appears to be the exact same color and it is also called midnight blue.

Not really, rarest colors are teal and pearl brown, each were single year colors.

Can anyone tell me if these are stock pistons? I know this motor was rebuilt, but I don't know If they changed the pistons or just the rings. I just sold one of my other cars so I have some money to sink into this motor. I'm not really sure what the stock pistons can handle, but I'm thinking since I have the motor apart I should build it to handle more power. I'm definitely gonna grab a larger turbo now and would like to run around 16psi.

Those pistons are .50 over so that engine's deff had some work done to it.
If you pull the pan and shine a flashlight to see the underside of the piston you might be able to find a casting or stamp of the manufacturer.

I shouldn't have to. There's hardly and miles on this rebuild. It look like the head gasket blew right after the rebuild because they didn't machine the mating surface to the required RA 12 smoothness. The gasket that was in there appears to be the same HKS gasket that I bought to replace it.
