Just got a bhg. Stock engine wit felpro and arp's. Only took 20psi on my MP t64 to do it lol. The good part is during the 3rd gear pull that blew it my a/f was sitting at 11.2 the whole time, finally got the maft pro tuned right. :)

Always use 93 octane. I didn't hear any detonation, then again I'm half deaf so I prolly wouldn't. The car was perfectly fine up till that pull, I honestly think it was just the boost that did it.
I'm just gonna replace the felpro and retorque, this engines goin in another supe I got sitting here.

It's too bad I wasn't logging that pull, woulda loved to see the numbers just for shits and giggles.

Hmm never hear of that, I always learn something new from you Ian.
Any other damage that coulda been caused by this, that I should look out for?

More than likely the effects from "incipient detonation", you don't hear it but it's there rattling away in the background.

Not to sound like a noob here, but if your A/F ratios are good, why would there be detonation?

You can have perfect AFR but if there is too much timing/boost for the octane fuel being used it WILL detonate Alec.

Ahh, so that's why 18 psi is about the max limit for 93.

There are a lot of variables but yep that's near enough, anything you can do to lower the intake charge temp helps keep it out of det but there are hard limits involved, you can pull timing but you get to a point where you would be better off dropping boost and adding timing as it makes the car nicer to drive.

That's one of the reasons a piggyback is only good up till a certain point. There's a lot more than just a/f that needs to be monitored/adjusted the keep a high hp car running.

You just got me slightly worried earlier which was why I asked. My friend has a MKIV with a 6262(.58 AR) turbo on stock 550's(cleaned and flow tested) with a Bosch 044 pump and raised fuel pressure. Stock ecu, just a VPC/AFC. He's got it tuned for 18 psi on 93.

hook up timing control and pull 4-5 *. You'd be even better off if you hooked up timing monitor and pulled 10*. Add it back in 2* at a time and watch the timing monitor to see when A. the ecu isnt adding any more timing, B. the ecu is pulling timing (at which point id go back down 2*) C. it blows again.

What ve level were you at in your 4500+rpm range at that KPA level?
Or if your using the "user tune" what % where you at above 4500 rpms?

Edit: a personal point here, Nothing over 15-16psi if your relying on pump

I couldn't tell you what any of the numbers were, I was keeping my eyes on the road and wideband.
I still haven't gotten the tunerpro to connect to the maft pro. Its a pain having to keep bringing the laptop inside to download files, then bringing it back out to test it. If AT&T got there act together and put the iPhone tethering together it'd make my life a lot easier.

I tend to be very conservative when I tune and always have a good safety margin in my engines to allow for a dud load of fuel if I'm 1000Km from home.

I also monitor EVERYTHING and on the new engine with be using active knock sensing/control for the first time.

Never been a big fan of Piggyback controllers due to the way they need to fool the stock ECU into doing something it wouldn’t normally, much prefer to set xx degrees of timing and it means just that!

He's running stock timing.
