Hey guys I am new to Supramania. I have owned a total of 4 mk3s but never had I owned one that has been sitting for 3 years. I need some suggestions on what I should do to the engine before turning the car on. I have alwasy had shops work on my cars but since I have a few buddies who do a little wrenchin I have decided to finnally start getting my hands dirty on this project. Thanks for the advice!

first thing you do is chk your oil, make sure all your fuses are good and that your gas tank is not going on empty..clean your battery cables and makes sure there arnt any flamable material in your motor.....oh watch out for vreepy crawlers. Rob

LOL, was about to call you on it...

Don't have to be that mean, but cranking an engine over with 3 year old fluids in it is NOT going to end well... Not to mention the rest of the systems. Brake fluid absorbs water, oil and gas turn to sludge, coolant destabilizes and rusts...

Personally, I'd pull the front timing covers off, take the timing belt off, and spin the oil pump drive with a drill to prime the engine as it's more than likely dry by now...

It's all been covered already if you read the thread....although the drill idea is cool but I don't see a drill fitting in the engine bay very easily.

3 years and no start= dead battery.

You should also replace every rubber peice you see- belts, hoses, vac lines.

I would really want to know why a guy who dropped $7K into a car that is worth $3K didnt start it for 3 years. Sounds like you just bought a good project car. Or a good parts car w/ a bunch of aftermarketparts to sell. If you have $, Id buy a bone stock MK3 that you can drive home and swap over the parts that bolt on(like the T04 manifold back to the muffler).

If you dont have $, then start borrowing tools & calling in favors like crazy. Youll need em. Once you get a battery, you should do a compression test or even a leakdown test to find out why its been parked in a cemetary setting under a big old oak tree.

This story kinda reminds me of my MR2. Sit back and relax kids....

Once upon a time, my roomate, who was selling timeshares at that time, gets an offer to head down to and live in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico for 6 months, and sell down there. He decides to go, and so does his work buddy, who drives an 88 MR2. He asks me if I can 'watch' it while he's gone, I say sure. he even leaves me a few hundred dollars for oil changes and maintenance. This was back in around 1999. I HAVEN'T SEEN HIM SINCE.:aigo: Hell, he's still in Mexico!
My roomate came back on schedule, but this guy loved it so much, he stayed. About 6 years ago, he emails me and asks me to sell the MR2, and send him the money. He sends me the title. Well....I had been driving the car on rare occasions, and had maybe put like 200 miles on the car in 5 yrs. BUT, about 2 months before he emails me this, the car starts developing SERIOUS rodknock. In fact, I was driving to work in midtown Atlanta, and it got so bad, I barely made it to work. I ended up parking it there...For FOUR years.
Anyway, I told him at the time that I couldn't sell it as a running car, and I never really heard from him again. So, the car sat down in midtown Atlanta for over four years, behind a nightclub, in a gated lot, slowly sinking into the mud, and getting buried under dead leaves. Well, the owners of the club asked me about a year ago, if I could move the car, because they had to redo the lot, and were selling the club. I said of course I could, and thanked them again for allowing me to leave it for so long.

SO, I head down one afternoon with a tire inflator, & carwash supplies. My plan was to inflate the tires, roll it out of the mud, and wash it off. Then I would have AAA tow it up to my place. After inflating the tires, I hooked up the jumper cables for the hell of it, and- mind you- this car sat with rodknock for FOUR years- It started on the first crank!!! Frankly, I was pissed! I mess constantly with my Supra to keep it running, and this RK biatch gets shoved in the mud for nearly half a decade, and fires right up!!!
:madfawk:

I know this post is WAY OT, but I thought you guys might find it amusing, the tenacity of the little Toyota 4AGE motor. The fact that it had 4+ yr old gas and probably sludge for oil didn't bother it much. But of course, I wasn't worried about any engine damage in this unique case. For Chingon- he definitely wants to clean out all fluids and replace.

So what fate befell the MR2? It's actually in a storage facility right now, waiting for a 7AGE hybrid engine transplant. I couldn't bear to get rid of it. Hell- the rest of the car is in pretty decent shape- Black 5 spd, sunroof, ALL equipment works on it. Hopefully this Fall, after a nine year sleep, it'll finally hit the road again, and become my DD so I can do a complete exterior resto on the Supe.
...The End...
