In most cases RK is the result of a BHG that got coolant in the oil and the owner did not tear down the bottom end and replace the rod bearings.

From what i've learned from having to rebuild my 7mgte due to the idiot previous is that they are strong. Most rod knock cases involve boosting without proper upgrades (fuel pump, injectors, etc..)or a BHG. I think with a good tune the stock bottom end is good up to the 500-600hp range. The weak link in the cast aluminum pistons. Just what i've been told over the years. Most of the time it's the owner...not the engine. Hope this helps.

MAINTENANCE!!!!!! if not done right, anycar will crap out, not just a Supra.
Supras get thrown inthe mix more as the engine are a bit more abused due to turbo, driver's etc.
My observation from last week relating to a frined and his 7m car :
before going on a 100 mile trip...only thing he checks ???? the radiator. No othe fluids. Follow him home and close to home, bearings start qeaking like crazy. checked oil.....dipstick is absolutley dry ...wtf ???
so proper checks, maintenance, drivers, all play a part.

The 7M is NOT "bullet-proof." It is prone to BHG in stock form. When people BHG, they try and just "get it home," which is a BAD idea, to say the least. Coolant in the oil thins the oil out, and you get metal on metal contact. From there, it's all downhill.

Is the engine flawed? Maybe. Every engine has it's little problems, and on the 7M, it's BHG and rod knock. Properly built however, it can be very good. It just costs you more than some other cars.

My opinion? Leave the 40 year old technology behind and swap in a JZ. :biglaugh:
