Has anyone on here had experiance with pulling an engine from a supra at a wrecking yard??

I just found a 1987 supra turbo at my local wrecking yard...and it has a pretty decent looking GTE under the hood WITH the turbo still there...looks complete. also has tems in the rear, not sure about the front...

my point is... is that something to stay away from? it wasn't wrecked, or at least not at the moment, it was a work in progress, all primered.

220k miles on it though....should i bother looking into it?

one thing is i DO NOT want the POS chassis/body. well some parts were decent if you'd be stripping and painting anyway but its crap and my car is nice enough not to need donor panels... and my dad HATES crap layin' around and would refuse a donor chassis like this. it had no wheels, at least at the moment. there is still an interiod (shitty) and other misc. parts, but the only decent looking thing on her was the lights, hood, and intercooler...oh and it had a nice newish climate control...

so basically, again, is it worth asking the yard more about or should i forget it? its not everyday i come across something like this so i had to ask.

I would because it is really cheap and you could rebuild it. The momey you save on buying the motor could be used to rebuild it.

does anybody know a rough estimate for how much it would cost to walk away with the engine and r-154? i dont want to call unless i have a general idea of how this works...

how would i take home the engine without also taking the chassis? do they give you what you need to brace the car and remove the engine yourself, or is it pretty much a fend for yourself thing? i dont know how i could go about getting the engine out... i've never removed one before (i know pretty much what's involved but...like i said i'm new at this.

I think you can hire a engine puller at Pick N pull...
Get a friend to help you out.

Probably $200 -$400....Call them and find out.

Most supras I see in junkyards are from BHG, but are relatively perfect outside

Agreed, but all too often they sat without being drained so the internals are usually pretty nasty. Good source for a builder, but not for a straight swap.

Good idea to find out the cost of the motor and transmission together...
Then find out the cost of the head alone, block alone and tranny alone...

Go for the cheaper route.

You can remove the cams from the head and it will save you more money, thats if you have a good set of cams at home.

Sometimes you could say its from a 1983 Celica or earlier model...you get the idea...If they dont know the difference, you could get it cheaper.

Cheers,
Roy
