JDM 7mgte Smog Results?
I know this may not be the "proper section" for smog but i just honestly wanted to get everyones opinion and maybe suggestions on what my options could be. First off, my car is a 89 jdm 7mgte swap III, Bone stock besides the aftermarket intake(carb legal) and ALL USDM EGR accesories on it. Im located in CA so that will give u guys a better idea of how stumped i feel

So!, went to smog my III today! Thought it would be piece of cake so im all happy going about my day! As i was at the station, im thinkin about all these parts imma get after the smog and registration 20 mins later the tech comes out lookin all casual like it passed and then BAM! The only thing i can remember him say was FAILED!!! I stood in awe for a couple of seconds as im stumped as hell.

He said everything else checked out legitimate but hes pretty confident that the problem is the main cat? But heres the story, previous owner smogged in july with no problemo(according to him), and honestly guys, i believe him. PO was legit and nice as hell. Had a great job and maintained the car fantastically. Handed me a stack of maintenience paper/receipts prior to sale. Anyways, i couldnt come up with anything to believe caused my car to fail? I compared the numbers from the PO smog to mine, and my measures where twice/almost three times as much?

So all in all im stumped but just really wanted your guys opinions and thoughts! I obviously dnt wanna spend the cash on a brand new cat not even knowing thats the problem here. Are there any other cats from a different car i can substitute and give it a shot? I was thinking my sisters Camry!!! Hahaha lol

Thanks and i truely appreciate any imput guys! Happy Boosting!!!

as far as I understand there is no difference... besides no EGR (which you obviously have)... sucks you have to get it smog tested. maybe your egr is stuck? IDK I'd say take it to a professional tuner, but that'd be a real PITA since you'd need to install hardware that'd allow you to tune the car. I've never had to get my car tested on the east coast (never had a cat either)

^ This.

To be of any help you need to give us something more to go on than "fail". Different high readings indicate different potential issues with how the engine and emissions systems are functioning.

I have the same issue, my reading were high, wish i had my results so i could post them, but the results show that it could be the oxygen sensor or the cat. But the cat has already been taken care of rpm(richard performance muffler). And just yesterday feb 7 2013, we changed the hac sensor and cleaned the oxygen sensor. So we will take it to our mechanic to do a diagnostic to see wats up with the rest of the sensors.

you might have the egr hooked up but a jdm ecu wont use it, at all, you see the usdm turns on the egr when it needs to be on otherwise it stays off via the switch valve under the intake manifold

assuming you are using the jdm ecu

Yes. The default state of the VSV is de-energized and since it's plumbed to be normally open vacuum will be applied to the modulator in that condition. The ECU energizes the VSV to block vacuum while at the same time venting the line (it's a three way solenoid) to hold the EGR valve closed. This arraignment makes the system fail safe.

The VSV is energized at appx 4000 rpm. Preventing EGR at idle is done by the throttle body. Therefore use of a JDM ECU with USDM plumbing would result in EGR at all times except idle. Perhaps that's what ALT88 was getting at.
