When I did what you are doing, I made the same mistake when cutting that slot. Mine was still able to just grab the shaft though. I locked it down with a locking washer and tightened it up. No problems so far.
Before I put it on the car I manually opened and closed it a ton of times to check it's strength, and it didn't budge.
As for your original question, if you are worried I would tack a weld on there. My experience with JB weld is that it will break under any real load.
