ok so i found a blue on blue 87 turbo, 5 speed for $2000!
it has a divorced downpipe, full 3" exhaust, and the headgaskets have been redone.

problems; oil leaking from where the drain plug is, and another oil leak from somewhere around the engine, ac doesnt blow cold, needs paint, 260xxx KMs on engine and body.

aside from the oil leaks i dont care about the rest, its on vancouver craigslist in british columbia canada, thoughts?

i forgot to add its been lowered, and has an alpine flipout deck; some extra goodies huh? but as far as the oil leaks go, what could be the diagnoses on that? i am going to search the forum here for common oil leak spots, but give feedback if you would like to add on the subject.

oil drain plug leak is common when someone over tightens the plug and it stress the welds on the bung causing the plug to not mate properly. my fix was to buy this:

as for other leaks, check power steering hoses, oil cooler hoses......replace as necessary. if it hasn't been done yet, do the oil pan.

Also, if the head gasket has been done, was it done correctly? People don't rebuild motors, lower the car, add stereos and other goodies, then just give the car away with all that. There is a hidden reason! A compression test would definitely be in order before buying this deal.

Exactly! Thats what I thought, but if he is giving it away and it's fine, then he's just dumb lol. A compression test eh? I'll have to look up how to do that, and thanks for all the info guys

motors are cheap, probably find one for $500-600 from a wrecker.

but depends on your goals, sometimes it's worth spending the extra money to buy a car thats in better condition.

I'd keep looking. $2000 for a pre89 that is leaking oil and has a huge amount of miles is a rip off.

With our cars, this is a gospel statement. Spending the extra 1k or 2, can sometimes save you a lot more in the long run from replacing things or fixing them. Also if there are any aesthetic things missing, you will have a long hard search to finding new ones, if you can find em at all. Just my two cents matey!

Well where I'm from, mkIII's are scarce, even if they did manufacture them here, there's only a handful on craiglist and i know of 2 that drive around town. Most of the ones you do find have complications like this one, but i wanted to get a post 89 anyway because of the tail lights and it would theoretically have less wear because its newer.

Although this 87 has the 89+ tail lights. lol

My goal is to have something nice for a daily driver with the ability to punch it once in a while, so maybe 400 horse? nothing too fancy.

Aesthetics, meaning visual parts. in this case things like The window louvers, side mouldings, OEM front bumper covers, mirror housings, etc. Most of these things cannot be bough brand new from toyota anymore as they are discontinued. You will have to search second hand market and/or used parts from induviduals.

I thought that was what you meant, everything seem visualy sound on the car, the rear bumper had a shitty bondo job done but thats it.

Remove the rear wheels and take a peak in the rear wheel fender well. If the undercoating have been compromised, and or if there is any degree of deterioration or rusting beyond your capability to repair, then it'll be your volition to "Deal or no deal".
