Most commonly, it's the heater valve:

At this arrow, there's a small metal rod that goes in to a plunger. Pull it UP, zip tie it in place. Do you get heat?

If so, time to replace the heater valve.

you can be cheap and ziptie the valve on the firewall open, but the heater will be running full-time (well, once the thermostat opens)..

Nuh uh ;)

The Mixer door in the HVAC controls the Hot/Cold inside the car, there's always some hot coolant in the core as the Valve doesn't seal 100%.

Ziptie is a good way to test though.

If it's a faulty valve/vsv he'll get Heat back if he get's heat for 30>40 seconds it's the CC Amp or CC box in the dash.

^^ yep, other wise keep a eye out in the F/S section for one, since toyota wants a arm and a leg for a new one. IIRC $250+++

It's the VSV or power to it. i had the same problem. I run full time and removed the heater bypass and vsv all together. If you need one I got it. Just as Ian stated

Huh? What? ;)

Bastards have jacked the price up...used to be around $36.

Probably the VSV anyway. My solution for that was to forgo OEM and fit a miniature industrial three-way. The $16 one I installed after going through two OEM valves solved the problem for good. Made in China it was. Go figure...

In my case, I just rerouted the vacuum line directly to the valve bypassing the actuator, and all was well. It's the actuator, (or whatever it's called), that's usually the issue. And the mixer door controls the heat just fine. On in the winter, and off in the summer. Been running like that for 2 years now, going on 3.

I have a question related to this issue. Yeah, the heater blows either cold or hot air all on it's own, but.. There's one thing that i'm really curious about. When it starts blowing cold air, after a few kilometers the temp needle rises a bit and drops right away. This fappens for a second or two at most. Presto, i have hot air again. I understand that this is caused by the traped air in the heater. I know what could be the cause of that, but i'm talking about something else this time. At the moment the needle drops and the heater starts blowing hot air, a stench of some sort apears. Like some plastic or rubber is burning. Very strange, chemical smell. That's what i'm curious about.
