Your confusing two different things I believe. Your cams and crank would have all been lined up on the alignment marks when installing the timing belt. This is not "Timing". After you get it all together, when the car is started and with the diagnostic connector jumpered, turn the CPS until the car is at 10 BTDC.

Don't mistake these two as the same thing, read through the procedures again if needed. GL.

I drove my truck for quite a while with the timing set cletus style, by ear.
It was only 2 deg advanced from spec.
I'm a master cletus

Ok when I installed the belt, timing belt, it was at 0 and the cams were TDC. Its all back together now, I was putting the crank at 0, cams were still TDC and I put the distro in. It starts this way but eventually dies, I got close last time but it dies. If I put the crank to 10 then align the thing on the distro and toss it in, it wont even start up, whats wrong here

u want ur crank and cams to be at 0 at the same time. ur getting ur timings mixed up. crank and cam timing are one thing. ignition timing is different. u dont have a choice, u need to get a timing light if u want to do it properly. yes u can guesstimate it, but u will never really know unless u get a light.

I already posted, I got the timing correct, well im not mixed up I mean. The crank at 0 and the cams are at TDC... fast forward to now that its all ready to go. If my cranks at 0 my cams are TDC. BEFORE I put my dist in, do I turn the crank to 0 or 10? Once I turn it there I just align the dist, put it in, start and turn until correct idle right?

If you haven't looked at the TSRM then go here...

http://www.swaqvalley.com/TSRM/10_IG.pdf

Timing is described in detail starting on pg 19, and there is simply no way you will pull this off without a light. It really is pretty simple. Just turn the crank clockwise until you see the only visible cam lobe standing up straight through the oil fill. A friend helps here, or you can turn it from underneath, hop out, and look, then repeat until it's there. Then turn the crank counterclockwise 120* or 1/3 of a revolution. Then move it clockwise again about 40* and your crank should be right at 0*. Align the drive gear on the CPS/Dist as described in the TSRM and carefully install it making sure not to spin the gear out of alignment and loosely tighten the bolt so the CPS can be turned by hand. Start the car and use the light to find out where you're at. Turn the CPS until you are at 10*. Tighten bolt and you're done just as easy as that. :)

You don't HAVE to have a timing light to get it running. I drove mine for a while with it just set at 0'. It will run. I think you have another problem. Does the engine make any strange noises?

strange noises? like what? We were mostly messing with the timing the rest of the night. I'll try and drop by Jon's place tonight and get a video of what's going on with the car to give you guys an idea.

^^werd.. timing off by 10+* wouldn't cause it to die.. it might be off a tooth or 2.. did you line up the marks on the cps (im sure they're on the dist) when you put itin? just look at the manual... itll tell you how to do it..

Well, my car did exactly what he is describing after I replaced my head gasket, it would barely idle, the only way you could get it to run, was to hold down the gas pedal... We at first thought it was a timing issue...but it turned out to be a HUGE vacuum leak...it turns out I forgot the scrape all of the old intake manifold gasket off, and when you would rev it, it would make a horrible screeching noise.

any leaking in the intake manifolds all the way down will cause this? I think I might know the problem... I dont have a gasket between the Y-Pipe and the next part it connects to, would that be it?

Also, I noticed the damn line for fuel that goes to the charcoal canister is broken off, would that cause this?

Thanks guys, I think I realized whats wrong.

I dont have THAT gasket in place... at all... would that be it?
