Nope, but my AE86 does, so if you have rust, I feel your pain.

(EDIT: Yeah, I'll have spent about $9000 on rust repair on the AE86 once all is said and done. :( Gay).

Good grief... Can't you find a cheaper body Jeff?

Well, that includes the painting as well. I might have been able to find a cheaper body... maybe. But then I'd probably have to fix stuff on it and get it painted too, so whatever. It's the price you pay when you want to make an old car new again.

Well, all pre 89 chassis had a bigger issue concerning rust. The 91+ version had a better coating and a better rust-prevention. I had two 89 Supes and two 92 Supes. The 92s hadn´t any rust at all. The pre 88-90 all had spots - on the inside and outside. All four where kept in garage and were fully serviced at Toyota.

My 88 doesn´t have ANY rust at all, but... It only ran 20.000miles and has been kept in Garage ...only used for sunny sommer days...

yes and one more time - YES. But my Supra is at the paintshop, so all the rust should be gone till summer :D

Either way, when I have more spare money, I'll buy new rear wheel wells from toyota including rear 1/4 and be done with it once and for all :)

Rear quarters are I believe all discontinued at this point, at least for North American part numbers. Japanese part numbers may still be good (happened with my AE86).

In any case, it's getting rarer to find, so if you want to go balls deep on your current car, get what can you can while you can.

I got lucky and managed to get myself into a set of new quarters and wheel housings for my AE86 (as well as fenders, hood, etc), and I love that I did. No rust FTW!

Yeah rust can be a big one, and I'd usually say if you're going to build a nice car, start with a decent (rust-free) foundation, but if you're really attached to that car and think you want to get it fixed, it can always be done with enough time and/or money.

No, I can´t give you _proof_ since it´s not mentioned in any Toyota repair manual but I DO know that they did some changes in better coating and better materials.

First, I heard of it and then I talked to some guys who were using our MKIII for racing purposes and they told me that they prefer the +91 chassis due to that rust-problem and better chassis materials.

And it´s the experience I made with all 89 and +91 bodies. I´ve been dealing with Supras since 2002 and believe me - all +91 bodies have been in better condition compared to all -89 and 88 expect for those which were garaged and had full Toyota service.

Besides, Toyota wouldn´t have admitted that fact. How would they have justified that. Let me give you an example. Most of us know that the -89 leather is of poor quality as the +91 is not. And they DID use other leather for the +91 seats and interior.

My 87 parts car is 100% rust free because it's always been in the North Texas area. My 86.5 spent most of it's life in North Carolina I believe. It's been undercoated many times from what I can tell, thankfully. The hatch area has a couple of spots underneath the seal. If I don't find and fix my leak, then the drivers side rear quarter will have rust. The rear wheel well is full of water.

yeah, that is the 6k i was talking about...

I re-installed the rear bumper yesterday with brand new hardware and fasteners - damn it is nice to re-assemble when everything fits as it should and you aren't worrying about whether the mounting tabs have rusted away or not.
