is this reasonable?

As a relatively new driver, I just put my volvo into the mechanic today because the steering wheel shimmies when i brake. I figured warped rotors (its a 1996 volvo 960 wagon) and the guy said the same thing.

question is: He said if they have to replace rotors and brake pads, its gonna be $450-$500 per axle. Is this normal? I thought brake rotors are like 50 bucks each... I have no idea if this is outrageous or if thats a normal price....

Almost all in labour stan. I had the rear set done on my 92 supra 2 years ago and it cost me $720. Yeah...
So do it yourself if you feel so inclined, and feel like it's within your ability, but if not I say let them do it if you can afford to. It was beyond my ability at the time to get the old calipers off as they had rusted solid almost, so I had to take it in.
Good luck,
eric

I think I got quoted about $300-400 to have all four rotors replaced. $450-500 per axle seems a little high, but not outrageous. Anyway, I would shop around and get several quotes. Or you can try to do it yourself if you are mechanically inclined.

i would totally go for doing the brakes myself, but not with the volvo. there's a reason why:

i've wanted a supra for a while now. the volvo is my first car, got it about 5 months ago from my parents who got a "good deal" on it from my grandmother (don't bitch about spoiled - i had to have a 4.0 all year to keep it, and its a 1996). i was going to sell it after rebuilding a 7mgte and use the volvo-sale money to pay for a supra. parents decided they will not allow that because apparently this car shits golden bricks and will never break down. they said they aren't letting me sell a "perfectly reliable" car that they gave me in order for me to buy a "pile of junk white trash car".

so i'm going to work all summer and only spend money on the gas to get to work so that i can just plain pay cash for a supra at the end of summer.

right now i at least have something to hang my hat on since they wouldnt let me sell the car because they think its gods gift to asphault, yet its now having troubles. i told them specifically that selling the volvo would mean i had a car that i could work on myself so it wouldnt cost much, and i'd pay all my own repairs / gas / insurance. if they won't let me sell it to get the car i wanted (with my OWN MONEY) then they can help fix it. i think thats perfectly reasonable yes?

Stan: It might just be that I'm old but I agree with your parents!

Having a good reliable DD is a very important part of owning a Supra! ;)
(even minor stuff on our cars can be very exepensive!)

on a side note, do you guys think i'll be able to find a turbo / 5spd mkIII in southern california at the end of summer? i'm figuring it'll cost me 2500-3300? i don't care about targa or non targa, and am hoping i could find one that wont need anything other than engine work...

about $200 in parts probably and $300 in labor, about $60 per hour if he's the normal type of mechanic. I have done some freelance mechanic work and dont charge to steep of prices but it CAN be serious bitch work. i charged $200 to do a fuel pump on an s10, mainly cus i had to get down and dirty cus this guy liked to offroad and never wash, drop the tank, use a TON of pbblaster and ended up with rocks, not dirt but rocks in my eyes.

do it yourself, youd be surprised to see whats holding your brake rotors on.

keep your reliable gold shitting volvo. you'll need it sooner or later when you get a supra. A friend pointed out the other day that i have never not had atleast 2 cars, it helps.

heres what you do. take that modded rebuilt 7m and drop it into the volvo for one safe ass-kicking machine.

but yes, brakes are easy as hell. go to a junkyard and pick up some rotors and get em turned if youre worried about price, but i wouldnt skimp on brakes, even if it meant getting a supra sooner.

thats why i just installed porterfield pads and lines, brembo rotors and a fresh master cylinder. all in all, it was around 500 for everything new. oem woulda been somewhere in the 200-300 range so it wasnt too bad

I bought a Subaru Legacy for a reason. Supra's need backups!
Volvo's are pretty reliable, and for the price (free) you can't complain. Drive that while you save up to buy a supra.

Or drop a built 7M into it... maybe Clip's onto something ;)

hahhaahh i was talking about that with a friend. it probably wouldn't be so hard given that its already running an i6 2.9 liter engine in there. but i guess if you guys say keep it for DD then i'll count my blessings. its a fine car i just would much rather be driving a supra :naughty:

i'm talking to driftmotion about my engine right now so the saga should be starting soon!

the volvo is now in the shop. turns out the dealer my grandma had it maintained at machined the rotors several times. you can't do that on european cars. the rotors are toast, and its gonna be $750 total for all the work that now has to be done.
