We just did a tuning on 91Mk3's 1jz powered MKIII last Saturday.

His setup :
stock Twins (originals)
HKS Sport exhaust catback ( resonator and HKS muffler ) No cats , 3inch downpipe
HKS intake/filter
USDM 550 Injectors
Boost controller -
Approximately 17psi - High boost
Approximately 13psi - Low boost
SafcII - tuned out to 11.2 AFR

At 17 PSI = We did 291 RWHP / 297 RW Torque
At 13 PSI = I thiink it was 276 RWHP/ Not sure on torque . I will ask him to post.

I drove the car 45 minutes each way before and after tuning and there was a huge difference in response, power and acceleration.

Looking at the curve though, he peaked around 4800 rpm...and slowly fell off. Set of cams will definiely liven it up for sure.

I believe these are very healthy numbers for the limited mods he has especially for a daily driver.

My buddy had a similar setup (but also 2jz cams) and had similar problems wiht 550s on the stock twins. Only dynoed 308whp @ 18 psi on a dynojet (11.2-11.5 a/f).. that night he popped the motor trying to do a top speed run...

We got a FPR (and a new shortblock) and dropped the fuel pressure down to like 35 psi iirc, pulled less fuel from the afc(-20 i think from -30) and dynoed 32x whp on a mustang dyno @ 18 psi (10.6-11.0 a/f)

Here's mine:

stock ecu
stock twins and intecooler
Walbro fuel pump
3" SS exhaust with (Magnaflow muffler and resonator) no cat
JZA70 3" downpipe
3" intake pipe with AEM dryflow
dyno results (untuned) with no bc or sc at 12psi > 294rwhp and 309lbs torque

I am dying to put a 60-1 turbo with safc, bc, 440cc inj and tune for 15-17 psi to see if i can make 400 at wheels. We'll see. :naughty:

damn those numbers are horrid, but im seeing more and more that maybe alot of ppl have this problem.. I feel bad for him. my friend andy at XAT Racing did 290whp with a y-pipe/3" DP.

Explain why is it horrid???
How different are the numbers from the ones you posted???
How aggressive was your friends tune? Do you have it documented that he made why more than that?
Maybe you should list your friends "Exact" mods even the hidden ones :biglaugh:
What type of dyno?
Tuning device?

91mk3 does not have a y-pipe combo...which can free up some power..
His tune is on 91 octane and safe for his daily driving.

I'm sure when he wants 350 + hp... it can be obtained..

But it would be nice to know what others are using/doing {TRUTHFULLY} listing everything to judge against. It willbe good to see what's common and what works and what does not.

Neither myself nor my friend is a tuner. so it would a good to know ..

I daily drive my 1jz at 452rwhp @ 17psi. I have the 272 small core cams, 624cc injectors, Garrett gt35r, driftmotion intercooler and pipes, aeromotive fpr, walbro 255, Koyo radiator, stinger standalone, I never have anything in my tank but 93octane, unless going to the dyno and then I add 110. I've never driven a 1j with the twins, but I would have thought they would make more than 291rwhp @ 17psi. I'm not knocking 91mkIII at all, I'm simply comparing my 17psi to his. I think he needs cams in a bad way and I know Zazzn is selling them. They're well worth the cost. At the dyno, I always shut my car off at 7200rpm, and it's never once level'd off yet. On every dyno pull I've made, and I've made alot of them, my car has kept climbing until we shut her down. I don't know how far my car will rev with the cams, but I'm too chicken shit to go past 7300rpm.

Edit: I also have 3" exhaust from the turbo bak, but it isn't mandrel bent, it's from an exhaust shop and it looks like ass. I love my magnaflow muffler though.

hmm. I did 293 at 13psi. That was with a ypipe upgrade.

But Jose did about the same as me before on a stock ypipe.

It could also be the health or condition of the motor and the stock twins. My 1J is pretty healthy 175 compression across the board and I managed 294/309 at the wheels with just bpu at 12psi untuned.

Could he have a boost leak? That power just seems a bit on the low side.

nah no boost leaks. That was checked over and over before going on the dyno.
I suspect it is his Boost controller. He is still using the old school HKS boost controller which has 3 buttons and has dip switch in the back to adjust high and low boost. :biglaugh: :aigo::aigo:
Prior to tuning he was complaining about boost creeping. BC may not be working properly.....time to upgrade that shit to something more cutting edge.. lol.

I made my numbers on a low compression 1jz. I have 135 across the boards on my 1jz. I don't know if the cams and head work can cause low compression or not, but I've checked it twice and Aaron checked it when he was here. 135 in every cylinder. I even went and bought a brand new tester to make sure it wasnt' the tester being bad. I'm hoping for alot more compression out of my newly built 2jz block.

I doubt its the boost controller. I say its the ecu retarding timing from too much timing when pulling all the fuel needed for 550s on the stock twins.

NP, I didnt mean to offend haha. his secret was simple though.. ypipe/ 3" DP combo, stock 370's with 93 octane on a dynojet.

As for me, I'll have stock twins, jdm 440's, BCC, AFC Neo, profec-BII (H:17/L:11), FMIC with full 2.5" piping, Trust 3" DP and blitz nur spec on 93 octane with semi agressive tune @ XAT. If I dont get AT LEAST 330rwhp I'll flip apeshit lol.

I've seen it done with numbers higher than that (aka 340-350whp @ 17psi) on not such a crazy tune at all countless times before. Locally and by just by browsing dyno sheets on SF and I believe some on here.. My motor is extremely healthy, stock and WAS auto prior to arriving in the U.S. Hope for the best ;)

yep like I said.. see it ALL the time and then I see these small anomalies and it makes me wonder. but I guess theres just too many factors to really get into depth.

Guess i'll add my 2 cents. I am not sure about actual HP maybe i will have it dyno'ed this summer for a base point. Just going by feel and what i have seen.

Just an Intake, stock-Y-pipe, 3" DP, Test Pipe and HKS Sport Exhaust (res and muffler) I am hitting (14.5 PSI, 1bar or boost cut) all the time and the engine showed 165psi across the board when i put the engine in. The car pulls well enough to beat out an IS350 I still have my diffy in the car from the 7M. The injectors are stock and so is the ECU. Did have the capacitors checked and changed.

Sorry that i can not give you HP number though. But maybe that will atleast give you and idea for feel on those few upgrades
