This fu#$@%$# sucks....
Bought the car a couple of months ago and was told it had a BHG.
Figured I would run a couple of tests 1st .
Did a coolant pressure test and cap test...everything was fine
also did a leakdown and it averaged like 15% my friend said across the board
changed the plugs wires and valve cover gaskets and got a used accordian because mine was cracked in a couple spots
let her run and get hot tested her out a tad on the street .
no temp difference?

So i figured its fine what was he talking about?
Put it on the road yesterday left the driveway temp goes all the way up
drops down and repeats. drive around a little it stalls. Turn it back on and theres no dash lights lol.
get back home and pop the hood. little wet under the overflow so i was like shit this is def a BHG.
put a little coolant in and took it out again " i know im an ass" then I hear the slushing behind the dash so I figure that since the guy put a bran new rad in before he sold it he never purged the system.
go on this site supramania ever heard of it??? It is awesome.
found someones post about jacking it up and burping it.
tried it and the temp didnt really do anything after that last night so i drove it to work today.......only to leave at lunch and see the dreded bird cage...

I want to die right now

HAHA-bigaaron that picture owns.

Sorry Det, that does suck. Had mine for like 4-5 mo and I was sitting in the parking lot one morning before school, waiting for a friend, standing outside my car. Talking w/ another one when all the sudden he goes "Oh Shit You're screwed!!!" I look back at my car and literally a gallon of coolant has poured out onto the cement, and I had just looked at the car no more than 30-45 sec ago and it was completely dry. Popped the hood, it was seriously just gushing out of the overflow.
Shittiest feeling in the world.

Are you gonna do the work on it yourself or be lazy (like me) and get it done by a mechanic? Sorry to hear that, it sucks.

Thats a BHG right there, not sure why you needed any more testing or wondering!

If you can do all that maintenance on your own, you can get a new set of head bolts, a new toyota head gasket (and other gaskets), and just do it yourself! Hopefully your block will be straight enough, do a good job cleaning off ALL old gasket material, clean up the head, get it decked, and thats about the minimum for 'doing it right' (as long as the block deck is properly flat)

BHG = poor maintinance/dumb ass

eh, Some what

when a motor has high mileage, and people boost the shit out of it, and the factory torque rating for the headbolts are what? 55FP's? thats not very much, BHG is old and abuse and poor Maintence, then people try to Fix it, Dont really know what theyre doing, couple K later it gets another BHG because of whoever fixed its mistake. leaving surfaces dirty, not getting the head Resurfaced, Etc.

can get a BHG from the Coolant getting Corrosive and eating your HG up over boosting, abusing.

Im not 7M, But im sick of people blaming the motor because of the BHG, and they cant fix a simple BHG correctly. dont blame the motor because Theyre not skilled enough to fix something so simple, blame the "mechanic"

the 7M from the factory isnt build for a race motor, Sorry, people treat it like it is, from using FACTORY shit, gets a BHG high mileage etc.

im serouisly sick of people being serouis, about the 7M BHG Trend.

that is all..

I bought mine thinking it just had a spun bearing that lead to major case of rod knock and piston slap, which was all because it had a BHG.

Didn't matter to me I just wanted a new motor, It was so bad I was able to push the 3rd piston down with my fingers.

dont you think its a bit fishy about the fact that thousands of 7m ve occoured even to ppl to maintain there cars liek they should and run them conservatively. its just and engine that is prone to the bhg just face it no reason to blame every one whos had a bhg on a 7m for poor maintinance

Yes, not all 7m bhg's are from poor maintenance or abuse. It had design flaws to begin with.

agreed, i think ALL stock 7m head gaskets will blow at some point in time with even a slight bit of modding. my friends NA has blown three times (dumbass was using composite hg's and stock hardware.) im pretty sure my hg is on its way out, i think its been replaced before i got the car but i have a 60-1 so yea......

great attitude! keep it up, and you won't be here to display it anymore! :)

name calling is for second graders. so unless you're in second grade, stop it. we don't need that here.

and BHG's aren't from poor maintenance. they're from the factory torque setting on the head bolts being too low (like 52ft lbs), detonation/preignition/ poor tuning. i suggest you learn a bit about a subject before you make such an arrogant and conceded post.

^^^Agreed. And there's absolutely nothing to back a statement like that up. Lets look at what we do know. 7M vs 1J vs 2J. Virtually everybody experiences a 7M BHG, especially those of us blessed with Turbos. I have heard of precious few who have had the same happen with a 1J or 2J.

So, NeatOman, in order for you to be correct then ONLY dumbasses who never take care of their cars buy MKIII's with 7M's and virtually only the mechanically best buy a 1J or MKIV. I think even the dumbest of asses would have a hard time agreeing with that.

Yes, some people do stupid things and truly earn a BHG, but that applies to virtually every engine from every auto maker out there. A more accurate conclusion is that 7M's have a weakness in their design, and it manifests itself through blown head gaskets.

Try this: Deflate ego, think, think again, then post. ;)

Well all name calling aside the guy I bought my 88T from was an engineer and the exterior and interior aside its actually pretty well taken care of...oh yeah And I changed my T-Stat and burped my coolant right and she is running awesome....I guess sometimes people freak out for nothing...that be me
