Is my Supra dead?

Okay, theres a strange and worrying problem with my supra. Yesterday, whilst cruising around at about 40/50mph, i noticed smoke/steam coming from the bonnet. Thinking it was an electrical fault or fire i stopped, opened the bonnet and the smell was like burning wiring or electronics. I didnt think it was a problem with the engine at first, seeing as the oil pressure looked normal, the coolant was well within norms, but later on this morning, i tried driving about 2 miles, and on the way back to my flat, it stalled. Steam/Smoke/Vapour was pouring from the bonnet by this point. Then when i restarted, there was a horrible clattering noise, almost like there was a diesel engine under the bonnet. as it was less than 200 feet to my flat by this point, i braved it.

The oil pressure was about 20psi and falling slowly, the coolant read that it was fine, leaving it for a few hours, it started up fine. No clattering noise, sounded fine, oil pressure was 40psi at idle. Problem is, i'm losing oil and or coolant somewhere. I dont think its a BHG as the oil isnt mixed with the coolant and the coolant hasnt turned any oil to mayo. Theres also no sign along the head/block seam to indicate anything coming out, however there IS oil all over the throttle body and theres condensation all over the top of the intake manifold. Could the PCV system be blocked and causing a pressure buildup & subsequent gasket/seal failure? Else, what about the intake manifold gaskets? The engine isnt down on power either, which is another odd thing.

I'm short of cash, and have only a few quid available. If the engine is totally shafted from the oil starvation (for 200ft, even though it doesnt sound like its got rod knock currently), does anyone have a 7M-GE laying around (sans ancillaries) that they could donate my way and/or fit?

If someone does have a spare engine, or the ability to repair mine, although i cant give money, i'll give you an Opteron Workstation with a flat panel, 1gb mem and a 7600GT and a weekend of free beer.

Anyone able to help? :(

were any large parts left in the road behind you?

just kidding, glad you've got another supra owner coming to help out.

Hehe, no the wierd thing was, theres no oil or coolant on the ground underneath the car and theres nothing in the spark plug gallery. just oil/water vapour coming from the intake manifold side, no wet plugs and theres no mixing of coolant or oil - wierd eh?

Wow! It's almost back to normal!

Ed (darket) came over this evening on his bike and spotted the problem straight away - a blown coolant hose at the back of the block that had a 3-inch split at the back so you couldnt see it.

Once repaired, i now have to go to his yard on saturday to get EVERYTHING done. Top end tidyup, new brake fluid, oil change, diff oil, gearbox oil, the lot.

The guy looks like jesus and works miracles like him too! :D

Three cheers for Ed! :D

Haha wow, good thing its not too serious.

I woke up one morning and all my coolant was gone. Took me forever to figure out, it was leaking from the little radiator overflow hose cuz part of the plastic apparently broke off so its not a secure connection. Freaked the hell out of me tho.

Sorry about the lack of updates, it's only now that i'm wardriving and found a wonderfully unsecured wireless access point - yay for my new (old) dell ;)

I couldnt do everything that i wanted on saturday, so just the timing and coolant was done, oil change and the rest of the top end stuff is going to be done next weekend.

However, i can report that the 12' timing works wonderfully, noticeable increase in power, slight increase in noise and increase in fuel consumption. This could have something to do with the fact that the timing had been set to 8' before ed corrected it.

Oh - and does anyone know where to get a passenger side front wing from other than a Toyota Stealership? The bottom of the wing has started to disintegrate and needs replacing as soon as...

and IJ - Annealed?

I come from a land down under
Aluminium in our heads is heat treated to harden it, annealing is the term for removing this heat treating and returning the head to T0 state full soft and can happen if a head is overheated.

Aaah. Well it wasnt really overheated long enough i dont think to do that kind of damage, it was only properly sans coolant for the length of derwent road.

Ed's doing headwork next week anyway, as well as a new set of NGK's - speakinng of which, what are the correct plugs? IIRC, they're BCPR6EY-11 but i want to make sure first....
