Is my mechanic not turbo smart?

Hi all,
I have a bit of a dilemma, I posted probably 3weeks back or so about how i'd go about replacing the gasket that sits under the turbo for the feed / return oil hard pipes and then I finally got around to going to my mechanic and seeing what he had to say about it.

His imediate response was just by looking from bonnet popped that it's blown seals and then he later said its a worn shaft. Now if I dont have smoke off boost on boost on idle decelerating accelerating and even when we dyno'd it I had the whole video with not a puff of smoke, all he said was that you should "take off the turbo and take it to a this specific turbo place to get it reco'd" now looking at a spare CT26 I have lying around... I saw the gasket that connects to the turbo with the feed and return line, and i'm pretty certain that's whats causing a small leak of oil (seems to be probably 5-10mill a week im losing for those that know imperial.. 1000mill = 1litre)

I am still looking for answers have done some searching on the forum but can't fine tune for what i'm after.

I believe as it stands that its the gasket that needs replacing, because my mechanic did seem like my presence wasn't that important or welcome... ??

Anyone shed some light?

My thread enquiring about what's involved in swapping the gasket...

"just by looking from bonnet popped" - meaning he didn't pull the accordian hose to check for shaft play or anything? Sounds like a jerk who doesn't want to be bothered, and it sounds like you picked up on it. I'd say to go with your feeling on him and go see somebody reputable.

I read your other thread, and it sounds like you're pretty convinced it's a leaky gasket. Have you thought about just getting a gasket from Toyota and replacing it? It would be a whole lot cheaper than a rebuild you might/probably don't need.

i agree he probably just dosen't want to work on it so he is just throwing an exspensive senario @ you so you will leave him alone IMHO. either go somewhere else or do it yourself.

Pull the turbo yourself and have a look. It's a long ass job the first time but it gets alot easier each time you do it. FWIW, every time my car has had a leak from the exhaust side of the car it had to do with the gaskets on the metal oil return lines.

I will be definitely now.

Yeah, thanks for the replies guys, i'll take off the pod / intake pipes leading to the turbo today or so and i'll feel for shaft play. Then i'll just get a mate of mine and step by step disconnect it.

Because from reading on this forum here and there when people have turbo problems I think shaft play would be someting noticeable... because my boost also builds very strong.

OMFG I found out what the problem was....:icon_evil 1 of the turbo flange bolts wasn't on the bottom from the side closer to the wheel... I then looked straight down where the engine mounts are and I saw the nut down in there coated in oil. I then saw on my spare CT26 took one of the nuts which I lost somehow from underneath when I was trying to get it on...

Eitherway.. this was seen when my cousin came past ew look a nice look with one of those dentist like instruments with a circle mirror on the end of the stick... which makes sense why it was leaking the way it was... and from where it was... so my dad gave me a hand with like 4 extensions finally got it in.... but its very fu****g tight took me an hour to get the nut on.... then I would turn it to tighten it.. but I think its the wastegate actuator.... or something its just soo in the way.... making life hard.

I am going to finish the job this afternoon... and make sure its on properly.

I also look a look at the nut to make sure it isn't bent or threaded.... is there any other special tip I need to get it on so it'll not move again until a wrench is applied....??

maybe put a tiny amount of threadlock...not in the threads, just after the nut so it cannot move unless force is applied. i had a problem with my integra. every now and then my rear motor mount would come loose. i would tighten it, two weeks later it would come loose again. after i put threadlock, i never had a problem with it again. i am not sure if this will work in your case. i am no expert, but it worked for me.
