Is it possible to strengthen/rebuild a W58 for a turbo application?

Interested in this as i really dont like the R154 box, its like stirring coal or operating a victorian railway signal box. The W58 was always so smooth...

I know they're not going to hold much more than about 320rwhp, but still, my power goals are minimal - looking at no more than that in its lifetime - looking more for daily driveability and reasonable reliability.

Now, i know you can rebuild transmissions with steel baulk rings and straight cut gears etc - but would it be possible to strengthen the box by doing something like cryo treating the main shaft on it?

When these boxes have disintegrated on turbo swaps, whats been the part in the box thats failed?

Cheers and TIA :)

Quit being soft and just get a good condition R154. Why bother spending time and money beefing up a W58 when Toyota already offered a stronger transmission for the car? And it will take just about everything you throw at it. I really don't understand why some people insist on acting like it's so hard and frustrating to shift and drive an R154. It's not hard or harsh... Really... Stirring coal is a huge exaggeration.

From your past posts and threads, your power goal is not high and your driving habits are pretty easy going. I doubt you would break W58 anyway.

My dad is in recovery from cancer and even he has no qualms about driving my car.

Eh, the W58 feels more refined, a better shifting, smoother feeling box :)

My power goals at the moment, and for the forseeable future, is just a stock turbo rebuild, with the same elbow back, catless exhaust & filter. May one day shim the actuator for a bit more boost - 10psi or so, but its plenty fast enough for me already - i dont get much chance to wind it up and have fun, most of my driving is around town, to the shops, to work, to friends houses etc. I'd even suggest chopping in my tubbie for an N/A :D

I'm already turbo joe, so the R154 looks like it's going bye bye :D

Looks like the W58 likes to chew its own gears when it goes.....hmm....

And no, i didnt think i'd be able to kill it - i dont drive like a loony, even when i have the chance :)
