ive been meaning to ask this question since i bought my car.under light braking i feel this tap tap tap going on in the brake pedal.i think its abs .but i think the abs is going on too soon ?under heavy braking 60-70 mph the whole car vibrates like crazy.this has been going on since i bought the car.

from what you read could it b the brake pads?

rotors are brand new replaced em a month after i got the car cause i thought it was the problem.

abs?

slave and master are new too

or is something fried in the abs system and needs replacing.

if you have or had this problem with your car plz give me some input and what to do cause it has been bothering me forever.

I would check rotor runout, just cause they were new doesn't necessarily mean they were within spec,I had bought a set for mine when I first got it and fresh out of the box they were as bad warped as the ones I was replacing.Had similar problems with a couple other vehicles when buying rotors from local parts stores.

when re-installing brakes, make sure you do several things...

clean the rotors with alcohol after installing....skin oils can contaminate the rotor surface and lead to hot spots later on.
Torque the wheels evenly, in the proper sequence, with a torque wrench.
When bedding in the pads, do not sit with the brakes depressed after heating them up...that will cause the transfer of pad oils/resins to the rotor surface, forming a high spot which will result in pulsations.
Ensure your rotors are true when pulling off the pads...your local auto parts store is the best place to check this.

i did clean my rotors with some kind of chemical wash at my automotive school. torqued my wheels good.but i never did change my pads since i bought my car maybe that could be the problem?or abs?

i've never heard of somebody using old brake pads on new rotors. If your going to the trouble of changing rotors do the pads at the same time. If you used the "automotive brake washer" did you rinse them with water afterwards and blow them off the air?.......you missed a few steps but sounds like warped rotors from the parts store. Go to any auto repair shop and have the rotors mic'ed and turned. They should be fine. Just make sure to put on some good quality pads and dont cheap out on them. You just dont know how many people i have come into my shop wanting the cheapest pads and rotors then come back 10k later with them worn out pissed off......don't skimp on brakes with the MK3.

By automotive parts washer are you talking about a varsol tank that is used to clean all kinds of greasy parts? That is not how I would prep rotors. I use Brakleen only and wipe them off with the blue shop towels. Also, I always recommend changing pads at the same time as rotors like other people have said.

actually i did i washed em in a chemical wash sink then rinsed em in water the dried them off with paper towels.btw we were out of brake kleen at school that week and were waiting for a new shipment cause everybody uses it to clean all thier parts .(not its intended purpose but it works awsome and im guilty of using a few cans for cleaning parts too:love:) so if i change my pads now will the rotors already be warped ive been driving on new rotors and old pads for about 5 months now will i also need to replace the rotors or can i get then resurfaced?

throw them out, rotors and pads. dont use varosol, use brakeclean^^ or "non residue cleaner like CNC shit i think it is" dont turn them either they'll just warp sooner and will cost a bit...but you can prolly do it in school for free though. when putting them on, dont use compress air even though those pads are new fuck they got aspestos in them. and keep them clean.

these cars a heavyeir than Shit...I wouldn't cheap out on brakes:3d_frown:

mistake: using old pads with new rotors....just a horrible idea

the vibrations are a combination a warped rotors and unevenly worn pads

Get your new rotors turned and get new brakes, don't forget to check out your parking brake while you're in there. Problem solved.

Brake pads now-a-days use .2%-.5% asbestos in the brake pads....won't hurt anybody unless you inhale it like a joint. Turning rotors wont make them warp faster, your driving style makes them warp faster. New pads mic rotors for thickness before you resurface them, make sure you use a parts washer and/or brake kleen and wipe them off and install. I do this at work everyday

^ I think what he was getting at by warping faster is it's a thinner metal more sensitive to hot and cold changes. It does also depend on the driver but they wll warp faster than a new rotor.

You're removing VERY small amounts and there is a minimum thickness spec for a reason!

Turn the damn rotors (even fresh out of the box they aren't always true), get new brake pads, tighten the wheels to the proper spec (EXTREMELY important, most people overtighten them!), bed the brakes in properly and also make sure the flange on the hub where the rotor sits is CLEAN, remove the rust!

Most brake pads are asbestos free as well.

The disinformation in this thread needs to stop, if you DON'T know, DON'T post.

i've never or ever will turn a set of rotors, and i know there is a min. spec for a reason. these days parts are getting cheaper to just buy.IMO. and the thinner they are the faster they'll warp even if its a few thou-depending on driving habits(these cars wheigh like 3600lbs dont they!)

and sorry i didn't know they stopped using asbestos

beachsupra i'm pretty sure slotted rotors are for more of a race app. the slott helps take the glaze off the pad. when there always very hot they will glaze. and good call on going new;)

I don't necessarily think they are any more specific to a race application than they are to spirited/aggressive driving.I know I had some problems with brake fade and rotor warp w/stock brakes just out playing in the backroads. The slots are intended to help release gases that are produced when the rotors and pads get hot,to help prevent them from glazing.A good, quality set of pads is very important also .

Haven't had any issues with them wearing quicker than oem.Ran slotted ones on my mk2's.I run drilled ones on my mk3,and currently have drilled and slotted ones on my cressida with 20k+miles on them(pulling a heavy ass trailer) and they still have quite a bit of material left on the pads.Pad material seems to play a bigger part in how fast they wear than rotor design.I have no preference between any of the three designs, they all work well.Have never had any warping or cracking issues with them either.
