My '71 SuperBeetle needs more than that on a cold night and it doesn't have one tenth of the electronics my MKIII does... not to mention that there's almost no parasitic draw in the Beetle.

The whole reason I was thinking of goin with this battery is to avoid having to move the batt to the back... I have an Optima battery now...

Is there a good small battery on the market?

No the 925 is a medium sized dry cell here is a pic of mine.

7" X 7" only 25lbs about half the weight of the optima drycell is the best to take shock and high g force and bouncy roads gel cell is an upgrade from lead acid though.

Neither is a dry cell. They're both AGM type batteries, sealed lead acid.

EDIT: I love how they trademarked "Drycell" for use with this product line. Don't be fooled, it's still a lead acid battery. A rechargeable dry cell would use NiCad or NiMH as the electrolyte, and requires a completely different type of charging system.

Evil:7X7 is pretty small... Do you have a pic of it next to a regular size battery?

Razoe: have you tried that Genesis yet? That thing is barely bigger than a CD case... Im in the same boat as you, I dont have a stereo or even AC in my car... I just dont know if being turbo'd pulls that much more amps...

Cold Cranking Amps = The amount of amperage a battery can supply for 30 seconds while still maintaining 1.2v per cell. That's 7.2 volts. This rating is generally derived from a NEW and FULLY CHARGED battery... keep in mind that manufacturer's may pad these ratings. If you're driving around town, running errands your battery's capacity and starting capacity may end up much lower.

Reserve Capacity = The amount of time a battery can provide a specified constant current (typically 25A, check with the manufacturer) before dropping to 1.75v per cell. That's 10.5, the limit for most automotive electronics to still function. This is mainly applicable to situations where you're running electronics while the engine is off, the alternator is dead, or partially relevant to situations where the vehicle's electric load is greater than the alternator can supply.

If you don't think you can use more power than your alternator can provide, think about it like this: a 2hr drive in cold weather with precipitation... wipers, heater, defrost and headlights along with all the other car electronics is a heavy drain, then add in resistance in the wiring from oxidization.

I'm not claiming to be an expert in any way, I simply prefer to err on the side of caution.

i have the pc680 in post 1, I had it in my all trac celica. It never gave me any problems in the celica but i parted that car out and tried putting it in my supra for the first little while i got it running, it ran out of charge Quick...... granted i was cranking it and starting/shutting off until my batteries died but my cheap autozone duralast lasted at least twice as long as that little battery. now its sitting on my shelf:)

I don't know of anything that doesn't require a different type of charging system.

EDIT: Did a little more research, both Genesis and Odyssey are owned by EnerSys, dunno if they come from the same plants. Odyssey is the line/brand EnerSys lists as automotive (among other things).

you mean like this one?

why did i opt for the 925? simple: capacity. sure the 680 might cut it....but leave your stereo on for a few minutes or have some sort of drain and it's done. not to mention the problems you'll have if you ever decide to drive your car in the cold. i have several friends that run the 925 year round here in MI....

be aware that most of the "other" batteries you find out there are merely repackaged odysseys.

for the small batteries i would recommend a battery tender. they will help maintain the charge on the battery and fairly inexpensive.

dr j- have you considered putting a heat shield around that battery? heat would be a little bit of a concern w/ me in that location.
