You all know Im rebuilding from the rod knock. My original HG was FINE, undamanged. Im getting a new head sent in that was remilled and all 7k miles ago. My block is straight as a whistle. I am getting ARP studs from titan, and I put the MHG in my shopping cart too, but is it really worth all that? I HAVE in my garage a BRAND NEW Fel Pro HG that I got for free, but its brand spankin new. So what would everyone do in this situation? I HAVE the money for the MHG, but Id rather not if I dont have to, get it?

if you keep it under 10psi it should be OK, are you going turbo? If you're keeping it N/A then all you need is a good surface head/block and torque it down to ARP spec.

i don't think the factory HG has any flaws when used for what it was designed for ... stock turbo aprox 8psi. it's the torque specs that were insufficient.

having said that, YES it is worth it! probably the best $200 or so you'll spend on your engine.... especially if your future plans ever include boost beyond stock!

yeah, its NA, I have my GTE but Im not building it now. Im going 1jz later. Im just fixing my NA, Ill be happy, VERY happy. I wont REUSE my old HG but Im telling u it came off the car looking BRAND NEW lol. Ill prolly use the Fel-Pro if everyones gonna say itll be safe. Im not looking for bulletproof, just a little more reliable than stock.

i vote mhg. It's cheap insurance... why not spend the extra few bux now and not worry later.

Thats what Im asking though, WILL I REALLY be worrying later with a fel pro torqued to spec and checked at least 4 times after for retorque?

Its just a GE and its getting ARP STUDs as it is.

If you're not gonna turbo it, ever, sure the composite should be fine. But atleast get the toyota hg if anything imo. Im not saying composite sucks, i just couldnt see myself putting in a new hg that isnt metal. Theres a reason jz's went to metal, because toyota engineers saw their mistakes with the 7m,(and i know the big mistake was the bolt torque, but a stock mhg woulda made alot more sense)

MKIII brent is making 400 plus hp on a oem head gasket , There was a guy on supra forums making 500 + I think .

The research I did before I replaced mine was that the oem is fine as long you tune it right , ie no detonation .

Which would you rather have , rod knock or a blown head gasket ?

if u are going to turbo it i say go MHG b/c you are raising the chance of detonation with the higher compression pistons and thats what really destroys the OEM H.G. ..... But if you are staying N/A the OEM H.G. is great just get some basic prep work done and tq it down to the ARP specs and you will be more than well off .....

No, no turbo, 1jz in a year or 2, for now just NA DD, with a fel pro gasket, it was free. NEW BRAND NEW, but free

No offence but are you saying that brent has a 400rwhp NA-T with a stock H.G.:3d_frown: ?????? Keep in mind he is thinking about bolting on a turbo to the GE and we dont want to confuse him with the idea that a NA-T is solid at 400+hp with a OEM H.G. ..... even the GTE's with a stock H.G. are bit risky at those levels.

I really dont think I will bolt on that turbo, no freakin idea what kinda nightmare that will be, doesnt the GTE have oil squirters or something that have to be on the GE in order for it to even work?

Don't use the felpro.... go to advance auto and get a beck/arnley for 60 bucks. It is the SAME gasket you get from toyota. I have blown 5 felpro ones around 10 psi on various supras but have yet to blow a new toyota one with ARP's at 12 psi in my daily driver.
