EDGE network only? :3d_frown:

OK, let's watch youtube videos, you'll only have to wait 20mins for one to download.

Let's surf the full internet on our new OSX cell phone at the blazing fast speeds of... a dial up modem.

Sure, edge technically can go up to the super fast speeds of 236kbps, about double that of ISDN technically, but I had a WM5 smartphone with EDGE on cingular, it never saw faster then 56k speeds in metro areas where cingular even has UMTS available. It would take me 5 mins to MMS a 1.2 megapixel camera phone image (250k).

You can get this super great new technology phone with dial up internet for the low price of $499 with a 2 year contract. Oh, and you have to get a special rate plan, but at least it includes unlimited dialup speed internet.

Its not a lightweight's phone let me tell you that.

On top of being rather complicated, you gotta know your technology.

And it can do everything the iPhone can, most things better.

You know the sad part is, cingular has a 3g network all over the country.. that's currently been active since 2004. The only sell data cards that are able to access it.

Too bad it will be a huge success from the advertising standpoint. People will buy it just because its the new fad.
The apple effect will happen just like the iPod.

Basically Apple will win no matter what at the start, and we have no control over it. We will just have to sit and wait to see if it sucks or not.

I was just reading about why it's not 3g.

They did not install the 3G high speed data technology because there is a lawsuit that involves Qualcomm which has been the subject of a ban preventing the import 3G phones containing its chips to Europe.

So what does that mean? It means Steve Job's went agenst Cisco and lost a lawsuit because he stold the phone's name from them (Iphone was trademarked to Cisco since 2000), but he did not make the Iphone 3G because he wanted to sell the phone overseas without making a different chipset for both countrys.

Way to go.

Yeah I heard about that.
Thought it was pretty amusing that they just went ahead and used the name even though there was already a product out and being used under "iPhone"

You guys not liking the phone isn't going to stop its success. It is actually a really nice piece, which does many things very well.

It is sort of a bummer that it is not the fastest web technology, but that won't matter to many people. From a marketing standpoint, releasing the iPhone with outdated technology is actually going to work in their favor; everybody with the "gotta have it" attitude is going to buy the phone anyway, and in 18 months or so, they can release an improved model, which will reinvigorate sales.

Apple is a boutique brand, they do not have to have the fastest/newest/best technology in their products to be successful. They excel in making reliable, flexible and good-looking devices.

Let us know how your experience with the phone went. What does it do well?
Or are you basing this off advertisement?

I only got to use it for a day, so I didn't have enough time to play with everything. A company who I do some work for had access to a few of them for a project.

I did not get to set up many things. The internet was a little slow, not as slow as it is made out to be in this thread, but slow nonetheless. The browser itself is the best I have seen.

The biggest thing that people are missing when saying this phone is going to flop is that they are basing it pretty heavily on the connection speed capability. I am a computer programmer and have had the newest web-enabled devices for many years. The thing is, other than to test out the functionality of the phone - I have never really used any of my phones to check email or browse the internet.

Obviously, there are many people who need (or think they need) this capability -- and I respect that. The fact is, the iPhone will have a connection speed good enough for most of the people who care. Above and beyond that -- there are many, like me, who don't care. Maybe it is because I am at a computer all day anyway, but many people with phones capable of connecting to the internet do not use those features.

Now, as for the other features of the phone - my frame of reference for comparison is a Blackjack and Pearl - the two phones I have right now. I use my phone for phone calls (go figure, lol), as an mp3 player, and as a calendar.

In those three areas, the iPhone is the easiest to use. I hate to be superficial, but the other factor of importance to me is the look. The iPhone is gorgeous. If someone out there thinks that the look shouldn't be a factor - they probably shouldn't own a supra either (hmmmm slow and good looking also, lol). I would probably also use the iPhone photo album as well, the screen is actually good enough to make showing pictures on it worthwhile.

I am sorry that I don't have more technical details to share, but I just did not have it long enough to do anything but play around with it. Bottom line is, it will be my next phone.

For those of you who really think they need better technology, just wait - you'll get it with the iPhone g2.
