hey everyone ive finally decided to stop fighting to turn my car and figure out why my power steering is no longer operational
now i know i had slightly leaky rack ( i think i can just replace the seals and boots, correct me if im wrong)
up until about a week ago the powersteering leaked but it still worked
now it works maybe once every 80 turns
im trying to figure out what could be the cause of this
any ideas would be greatly appreciated

Once every 80 turns? How are you sure it's working at all? Fix the rack, you can get them reman or get a new one, reasonably cheap too. Your pump is going to suffer without the fluid in it.

the reservoir has fluid in it
the leak was really slow
i just kept an eye on the levels and kept it full
its an 87 without pps
im sure it works at all becuse about every so often the steering gets super easy like driving a caddy
there is also this slight click whenever you start to turn the wheel
and it whines whenever im rolling in reverse
you think maybe the pump isnt getting fluid?

You might want to take out the reservoir and clean it with brake cleaner, especially the screen at the bottom. It gets really clogged over the course of 20+ years and can definitely restrict fluid flow. Although I've never heard of it being this bad...still a good thing to do anyway. A full P/S flush would probably be a good idea too unless it's been done recently that you know of...

just got back in from bleeding the system and i found tiny metal shards in the fluid, anyone know what could cause that?
im also trying to figure out if the shards are from the rack or from the pump cause the pump is still circulating fluid
thanks

It still sounds like the fluid isnt flowing how it should...only possibilities I can think of are

1)Bad P/S pump: You said it whines sometimes, which is a symptom of fluid starvation...which can cause pumps to go out...

2)The reservoir screen is still dirty: I know you said you cleaned the tank, only reason I mention it is because you didn't say what you did exactly. You have to get a couple cans of brake cleaner (that's how much it takes) and spray it in there from every angle and drain it out again and again, as you scrub the screen with a toothbrush or something. Obviously the walls of the reservoir shouldn't be dirty but the screen is really the focus of the whole operation - if it's clogged then fluid can't get through as well as it should. Alternatively you could just take out the screen and put in a Magnefine P/S filter instead.

I also don't know how you went about bleeding, or flushing the system. But the best way is to take off the return line and route it into some kind of large container like a gallon milk jug (you'll need some plastic tubing to do this). Fill the reservoir, then have someone else start the car and start turning the steering wheel slowly in both directions, all the way to full lock, as you pour fresh fluid into the reservoir. It should suck up the fluid FAST (like almost faster than you can pour), if this doesn't happen the pump is probably gone or there's still some kind of restriction. Also this process takes at least 3 quarts.

Can't think of anything else, except...you are putting in automatic transmission fluid, and not power steering fluid, right?

yea the screen is clear i sprayed 3 cans of brake cleaner in there, and according to you i did not bleed the system properly
so im gonna go try that now
but i did find metal shards in the fluid and im wondering if that means the pump is already gone
and if so im just gonna drain the system and loop the lines till i can afford a new rack and pump

Yeah the metal shards do point to a dead pump. Besides you've done pretty much everything to make sure there's no restriction...bleeding it is good just to make sure you get all the metal out of there, but I don't see it fixing your problem if nothing else you've done has. Well at least you'll be good to go once you get a new pump...
